BPS Automatic Submersible Puddle Pumps (BPS-80A, BPS-100A & BPS-400A)

The APP BPS automatic puddle pumps combine compact submersible pumping with reliable automatic control using a float switch. With a top discharge and water-cooled design, they are ideal for applications where space is limited and the pump may operate partially submerged.

Why choose the BPS Automatic pumps

Choose the BPS automatic models when you want hands-free pumping that starts and stops based on water level. Models with the “A” suffix use a float switch for fixed automatic operation. Pendant floats are best in wider, unobstructed chambers, while narrow or obstructed sumps may suit alternative float arrangements. If your sump is very narrow or your water levels are extremely shallow, the BPS-100EA is purpose-built for that scenario.

Applications

Suitable for:

  • Automatic cellar and basement drainage
  • Sumps and pits where unattended pumping is required
  • Tanks and light drainage applications
  • Trade and industrial clean-up requiring automatic level control
  • Clean and slightly dirty water transfer

Not recommended for ponds or water features.

Construction and Build Quality

BPS automatic pumps are built in durable thermoplastic with a top discharge configuration for restricted spaces. They use a carbon/ceramic mechanical seal in an oil chamber with an inner lip seal for wear resistance and protection during short periods of dry running. Shaft materials are model-specific: 304 stainless steel shafts on BPS-80 and BPS-100, and a 410 stainless steel shaft on the BPS-400.

Key Features

  • Automatic operation via float switch
  • Top discharge, water-cooled design for limited-space installations
  • Built-in overload protection that shuts down on overheating and restarts once cooled
  • Anti-airlock device for increased reliability
  • Designed for clean and slightly dirty water applications

Float Switch Comparisons

Below is a diagram comparing a manual BPS pump with automatic BPS pumps using both pendant and tube float switch designs:

Comparison of manual and automatic float switch designs for APP BPS pumps

For automatic pumping in narrow sumps, the BPS‑100EA is recommended, as its compact float switch reduces the risk of obstruction. Pendant floats can become trapped in restricted chambers (as shown above).

For more information on float switch types, see our Automatic Water Pump blog.

What is the Difference between a Manual & Automatic Water Pump?

Manual Pump - A pump that does not have a float control or pressure switch to start and stop. It will require an operator to control it.

Automatic Pump - A pump that has a float control or pressure switch to start and stop without an operator.

A float switch is a level controller that has a buoyant, water-tight device that lies
on a liquid, actuating a micro-switch when the level rises or falls, turning a pump on or off.

Which Hose Should I use with my Water Pump?

Layflat hose is very affordable but can kink. Depending on your use, you may be better using a reinforced suction delivery hose for your needs.

Suction delivery hose is ideal for pumping up stairs or over obstacles.

Jonathan Martin explains the differences to help you choose which hose is best for your scenario.

What are the Different Types of Float Switches?

Each type of float switch has its advantages and is best suited for specific scenarios. The choice of float switch depends on factors such as the type of liquid, space constraints, required accuracy, and the pump's intended application.

Who We Are

Who We Are

Flood Protection Solutions Ltd launched floodandwaterpumps.co.uk to make quality water pumps and expert advice easily accessible online. We have a large stock of water pumps which are available with next day delivery. Browse our shop to see the range of water pumps and flood pumps available. Whether you require pumps for flood water, draining construction sites or even for a water feature we have selected the best pumps available.

For a number of years, industry quality pumps were only accessible to trade customers, and domestic users were  left with generally poor-quality water pumps which often failed when used in anger. We have combined high-quality, reliable domestic and industrial pumps into one website which makes the best products available to all.

Flood Protection Solutions Ltd was founded in 2012, and has been supplying flood barriers, water pumps and consultancy services for the past 12 years. As part of our consultancy work, we extensively travel the UK, visiting homeowners, businesses and agencies to advise on flood protection schemes. We realised that too many people had previously purchased either the wrong type of water pump, or a poor quality one which did not perform the task well, and would not be reliable in service. Water pumps can be very important, and therefore you need the right type of pump and it need to be hard wearing.
