Flood control: removing water and helping stop it getting in.
Flood control is about managing water when it arrives, not just preventing it. Effective property-level flood response usually combines two elements: removing water that has already entered, and preventing further ingress. This collection covers both.
The right approach depends on the source of flooding, the depth and volume of water, whether mains power is available, and how quickly water needs to be moved.
For active flood situations, pumps are the priority. For properties at known risk, barriers and protection measures are typically deployed in advance.
Why flood defence schemes need pumps.
Pumps are the part of a flood defence scheme people forget, yet no scheme is really complete without one. Barriers, flood doors, walls and embankments reduce how much water reaches a property or asset, but no defence is ever perfect. Water still arrives through seepage, through groundwater rising beneath a wall, or as surface water that becomes trapped on the dry side with nowhere to drain. A pump removes that water before it causes damage, which is why pumps are designed into flood schemes at every scale. We explain the principle in full in our guide to the importance of pumps in a flood defence scheme.
Property flood resilience pumping.
At the smaller, property scale, this is the heart of Property Flood Resilience (PFR). A resilient home combines barriers, flood doors and airbricks to keep most water out, with an automatic pump as the last line of defence to clear whatever gets past, quietly and without anyone present. You can see how this works in our guide to sump pumps and property flood resilience and our pick of the best automatic pump for a flooded basement, and in real installations: an EVAK Residox pump behind a flood barrier, an EGO 500 GI behind a flood wall, and an APP RS32EA protecting a flooded doorway. For choosing the pump itself, see our top puddle pumps for flood and dewatering.
Larger scale engineering flood control.
At the larger, civil engineering scale, pumps do the same job on a bigger footing. They dewater excavations and cofferdams while defences are being built, provide over-pumping and temporary works during construction, and form permanent pumping stations that lift water over or through a defence where it cannot drain away by gravity. Reliability is everything at this scale, which is why the same pumps we supply to homeowners are trusted by the Environment Agency, water companies and councils, and why our flood work has featured on BBC Rip Off Britain. And as flash flooding becomes more frequent, having the right pumping in place matters more than ever, as we cover in our guide to preparing for flash flooding.
Pumps for flood water removal.
More about flood pumps.
Our Flood Control Pumps range brings together a selection of pump types commonly used for flood response, emergency water removal and drainage. This includes puddle pumps, submersible pumps, engine driven pumps and more, with links below to browse each dedicated pump category.
Puddle Pumps
Designed to remove water down to very low residual levels, typically 1 to 5mm. Puddle pumps are used for final clean-up after flooding or where a standard submersible pump leaves water behind. Suitable for clean to lightly contaminated water. Available in automatic or manual.
Submersible Flood Pumps
General-purpose submersible pumps for moving large volumes of water quickly. Commonly used in flooded basements, garages, cellars, outbuildings and external areas. Most models handle clean to lightly soiled water, with sewage-rated options available where contamination is present.
Engine-Driven Pumps
Used where mains power is unavailable, has failed, or where higher flow rates are required. Engine Driven Pumps are suitable for severe flooding, agricultural land, remote sites and large-scale dewatering. Available in petrol and diesel depending on duty requirements.
Packaged Pump Stations
Permanent, automatic systems installed below ground to manage water as part of a long-term flood resilience strategy. Packaged Pump Stations are typically used where water needs to be lifted and discharged automatically, such as basements, low-lying properties, or developments below sewer level.
Property-Level Flood Protection
Pumps deal with water once it has entered. Physical flood protection products are used to reduce or prevent water entering in the first place, typically deployed when a flood warning is issued.
- Door and opening barriers – Installed across doorways and openings to block surface water entry
- Water-activated – Sandbag alternatives that expand on contact with water to seal thresholds and gaps
- Airbrick covers – Prevent water ingress through airbricks, a common source of internal flooding
- Rapid-response flood kits – Pre-assembled kits for fast deployment during flood warnings
These systems are most effective when used together. A typical setup combines a flood barrier, airbrick covers and a flood kit, supported by a pump for any residual water.
Important Information: Bespoke Barriers and Flood Risk Surveys
Flood & Water Pumps is part of Flood Protection Solutions Ltd, within the wider FPS Group®.
If you require a bespoke or permanent flood barrier system (such as aluminium demountable barriers engineered for a specific opening), these are not stocked products and are designed on a project basis. You can obtain a quote from Flood Protection Solutions here: Flood Barrier Enquiry.
If you require a flood risk survey, site assessment or engineered flood resilience design, this is delivered through FPS Environmental Ltd on a formal instruction basis.
This collection is product supply only. Where a project requires investigation, design or consultancy input, these services are provided separately by the consultancy team.
