What each valve does
Non-return (check) valves stop water flowing back when the pump stops, in spring or swing types. Ball and gate valves isolate the line for servicing. Foot valves with a built-in strainer sit at the suction end of a surface or self-priming pump to hold the prime and keep debris out.
Where each valve goes
Fit a non-return valve on the discharge to prevent backflow, an isolation valve so you can service without draining the system, and a foot valve on the suction line of any pump that lifts water from below. See our strainers and intake protection too.

What does a non-return valve do?
It allows flow in one direction only, so when the pump switches off, water in the discharge pipe cannot run back into the pump or chamber.
What is a foot valve for?
A foot valve sits at the bottom of the suction pipe on a surface or self-priming pump. It holds water in the pipe so the pump stays primed, and its strainer keeps debris out.
Ball valve or gate valve?
Both isolate the line. A ball valve opens and closes with a quarter turn and seals well; a gate valve opens fully for minimal flow restriction. Either works for isolation.
