Water collects

Rainwater or seepage flows in via the gravity inlet and pools at the bottom of the buried chamber.

As the level climbs, the arm float lifts. At the trigger height it closes the switch contact.

Pump discharges

The Ama-Drainer N 301 powers up, lifting water through the riser and out to the sewer.

Cut-out at low level

The arm drops as water clears. The switch opens and the pump rests until the next cycle.

What a packaged pump station is used for

The same units can have a number of use cases. These are the jobs our 190 litre stations do most often.

  • Flood control: a dedicated low point behind a flood wall, barrier or in a driveway, so flood water is collected and pumped away automatically, with no pumps to deploy and no hoses to drag out in a storm.
  • Basement waterproofing: the discharge point for a Type C cavity drainage system, removing the groundwater the membrane channels to the sump.
  • Pumped surface water drainage: taking flows from channel drains and gullies where there is no gravity outfall.
  • Foul and grey water drainage: lifting waste from a basement, extension or low-lying property up to the sewer.
  • Groundwater management: controlling seepage and rising groundwater at a permanent low point.
  • High-level overflow: a backup route when a gravity outlet stops working, for example when a non-return valve closes during a sewer surcharge.

Which water are you pumping?

The first decision is the type of water, because it sets the pump you need.

  • Clean, grey or surface water (rainwater, groundwater, sinks, showers, flood water): the Sump 635 single or twin. See also our surface water and basement waterproofing ranges.
  • Foul water and sewage (toilets and solids): a station built around a sewage pump, the Sump Foul, Foul Pro or FEKA. These pass solids that a clean-water pump cannot.
  • Large-scale flood water: the high-flow Microforce, for high-inflow, flood-risk sites.

Clean water is rainwater, groundwater and surface water. Grey water is waste from sinks, showers and washing machines. Foul water contains sewage and needs a pump rated to pass solids.

Sewage and foul water stations

Where waste cannot reach the sewer by gravity, for example from a basement, an extension below sewer level or a low-lying site, a foul water pump station lifts it to the connection point. Our Sump Foul (EVAK Hippo 50), Sump Foul Pro (EVAK Hippo 100) and Sump FEKA (stainless) are all built around sewage pumps rated to pass solids.

When you install or alter foul drainage in England the work falls under Building Regulations, and Approved Document H is the guidance used to show compliance. In short: choose a pump specified for sewage rather than clean or grey water, size the chamber around the number of people it serves (a domestic figure of 150 litres per person per day, holding a full day's inflow in case of a fault), and use automatic operation for an unattended duty. Packaged stations for flooding and flood risk

A packaged station makes an effective, permanent flood defence when it is set as a dedicated low point, for example behind a flood wall or barrier, or in a driveway, so water is collected and pumped away automatically.

For high-inflow sites, the Microforce is the highest-flow 230V station we supply, at 830 L/min. Designed for high inflow conditions, the Microforce system is ideal for sites at flood risk. It is not suitable for low-flow or small scale floods, to avoid rapid on/off cycling. Basement waterproofing and Type C systems

In a basement, a packaged station collects and removes the groundwater that a Type C (cavity drainage) system channels to a low point. The Sump 635, in single or twin form, is our most popular choice for this, usually specified with a sealed lid. Sump chambers, sump pumps and packaged stations explained

The terminology causes a lot of confusion, so it is worth being clear.

A sump chamber is simply the chamber at the low point that collects the water. It can be formed on site, or it can be an existing chamber in a cellar. A packaged pump station is a pre-formed chamber supplied with the pump, internal pipework and non-return valve already fitted, so the components are matched and tested to work together. A site-constructed chamber suits refurbishments and connections into existing drainage, where size and depth are dictated by the construction. A packaged station suits new installations where you want predictable performance, easy servicing and a fast, low-risk install. A sump pump is not a distinct type of pump. The term refers to any pump designed to sit in a sump chamber, and in practice it is a colloquial name for an automatic submersible pump. You can browse ours in the sump pumps collection.

The real distinction is what the pump can pass. A clean or grey water pump is not built to handle sewage solids, which is why a foul duty needs a sewage-rated pump. Other chamber sizes are available

The stations listed above use our 190 litre Iguazu chamber, which covers the majority of domestic and small commercial installations. Larger chambers are available, from 300, 450 and 600 litres up to 8900 litres, in widths from 610mm to 1800mm.

Larger stations are almost always site specific. The chamber size and depth, the inlet arrangement, the number of pumps and the discharge route all depend on the flows involved and the levels on site, so they are supplied by quote rather than listed for sale online. Most standard systems are available for fast dispatch. However, some pump stations are built or configured to order, particularly where specific chamber sizes or layouts are required, so next day delivery may not always be possible.

What is the difference between a sump pump and a packaged pump station?

A sump pump is a single submersible pump that sits inside an existing chamber. A packaged pump station is a complete system, with the chamber, pump, internal pipework, non-return valve, and float switch supplied as one ready-to-install unit.

What is the difference between clean, grey and foul water?

Clean water is rainwater, groundwater, and surface water. Grey water is wastewater from sinks, showers, and washing machines. Foul water contains sewage from toilets and requires a pump rated to handle solids, such as the Iguazu Foul, Foul Pro, or FEKA models.

Can I get a bespoke or larger packaged pump station?

Where does the pumped water discharge to?

Discharge depends on the type of water and the property setup. Clean water and surface water typically discharge to a soakaway, ditch, or surface water drain. Foul water must discharge to a foul sewer or treatment plant.

Can a packaged pump station be installed indoors?

Yes, in principle, but it depends on the floor construction and build-up. Indoor installations are common for basements, garages, and properties where external installation is not practical, but the structure must be suitable to accommodate the chamber and allow for correct installation.

For internal installations, and for any foul water system, a sealed and recessed cover should be specified to contain odours. This is available as an optional extra on the relevant models.
