Packaged Pump Stations for Flood Control & Wastewater Removal
The Packaged Pump Stations (often referred to as sump and pumps) are designed for ease of use, with a hassle-free installation process. Once installed, they are fully automatic, requiring minimal intervention, ensuring reliable performance with simple, straightforward operation.
The Sump and Pump kits can be used for a wide range of applications, as listed below:
- Flood Control
- Wastewater from sinks, showers etc
- Foul waste from toilets
- Basement waterproofing
- Pumped surface water drainage systems where gravity drainage is not available, as can be seen here: Pumped Surface Water Drainage Case Study.
The Packaged Pump Stations come supplied with all internal pipework, a non-return valve, and the specified water pump as a complete kit, ready for use.
The ‘Plug & Play’ setup means they are relatively simple to set up, and can be installed by excavating a suitable hole, then setting them into the ground. The pump in the chamber is operated by a float switch, meaning as the sump fills with water, the pump will automatically operate and pump the water to a drainage point. The discharge hose is not supplied as part of the kit, however they can be used with a Suction Delivery Hose, if a hose tail and hose clip are also purchased.
The stations are very popular – as they’re set into the ground, they’re effectively hidden once installed, leaving only the lid of the inspection chamber visible. Although the initial installation cost for a Sump and Pump kit is higher than that of the puddle pump, these kits have a number of advantages. They operate automatically, so there’s no need to be present during flooding, a relief for many when it comes to flood management.
Which Pump Station Should I Use?
There are a wide variety of sump and pump packaged pump stations, with the suitability of systems varying depending on your proposed use. Below is a matrix to help you choose your preferred sump pump kit.
N.B Grey water is wastewater from sinks, showers, and washing machines that can be reused for certain purposes, while foul water is wastewater from toilets, kitchens, and other sources that contains contaminants and requires treatment before disposal.
Using Sump and Pump Kits for Flood Control
Sump and pump stations are utilised in many places across the UK for flood prevention. Installation can be done in several ways:
• Drill into the tank and install a sump pump kit outside so that it allows the groundwater in the tank to enter and be pumped out to a suitable discharge location.
• Installing the pump in underground pipework to connect to a drainage system or act as a high-level overflow to an existing surface water drainage system.
• Setting the pump in a garage or basement floor to remove any water ingress from the property, pumping it back out again to keep the water level internally to a minimum.
Pumped Drainage Systems
In situations where gravity drainage is not possible, in between low and high levels, sump and pump stations can be used to pump water from lower areas to higher outlets, such as a sewer or ditch. A foul water sump pump kit such as the Iguazu Foul is typically used for any basement where sewage needs to be pumped to a higher connection of an existing sewer. In cases where a foul water system is being utilised or the installation is indoors, a sealed and recessed cover should be used, which is available as an optional extra.
Basement Waterproofing
Waterproofing a basement using a cavity membrane system (Type C) that channel water to a sump pump is a common technique. The AMA Drainer 301 is the most popular water pump used in this style of waterproofing, and is available as both a single system as part of the Iguazu Sump 635, or as a twin system with 2 pumps in the Iguazu Sump Twin. The AMA Drainer 301 is the best pump to be used in this scenario thanks to its build quality, low maintenance requirements, and the accurate on/off level with the float switch, leading to superior pumping performance.
You can also specify a high-water alarm and be assured that you will be alerted to any problems in your system.
