Replacing a pump

Replacing a pump? Start with the data plate.

Most pumps have a data plate on the motor or body. Photograph it before you remove the old pump, because once it's gone, so is that information.

The numbers that need to match

  1. Flow and head

What the pump does, in litres per minute and metres of head. The new pump must meet the same duty.

  2. Power and voltage

The kW and the supply: 230V single phase, 400V three phase or 110V site. It must suit what you have.

  3. Inlet and outlet size

So the new pump fits your existing pipework without changes.

  4. Type and footprint

Surface or submersible, manual or automatic, and whether it fits the space.

Model no longer made?

That's common, and it's fine. With the flow, head, power, voltage and connection sizes, a current pump can be matched to the same duty.

Did the old pump fail early?

It may have been the wrong pump for the job, and a straight like-for-like would repeat the problem. For installed systems that keep failing, see our Engineering Review.

The easiest way to buy

Don't know your numbers? Start with a kit.

Each kit pairs the pump with the hose and fittings for a common job, and quotes the flow you'll get through the hose supplied. Check the lift and distance on the kit page before you order: returns are for unused items only.

What do you need the pump for?

Before you order

The questions we'd ask you.

Run through these and you'll know what you need before you order.

  1. What is the pump for?

Groundwater, flood water, silty site water, sewage or clean water each need a different pump.

  2. How high does the water need to lift?

This is the head, in metres. If the pump can't beat the lift, it won't pump at all.

  3. How far does it need to travel?

Measure it. Long runs, bends and narrow hose all cut the flow. Check yours with the Water Pump Performance Calculator.

  4. What power do you have?

230V at home, 110V on site, or petrol where there's no supply.

  5. Should it switch on and off by itself?

Automatic for sumps, basements and overnight; manual if someone will be there.

  6. What hose or pipe will it run through?

Match the hose to the pump. Layflat is light and cheap; suction and delivery hose won't kink.
