This FPS Engineered™ kit pairs the Stream SPK530A heavy-duty automatic puddle sucker with 10m of 25mm suction and delivery hose and a hose clip. It is built for water that has to be dealt with on premises where nobody is going to notice it quickly: plant rooms, switch rooms, lift pits, basement stores and service voids.

The pump runs on a crab floor sensor, a compact water sensor on its own lead that sits flat on the floor and starts the pump at 20mm, stopping it at 10mm. There is no control panel, no probe and no wiring to terminate, which on a commercial site means no electrician, no commissioning visit and no enclosure to find space for.

Behind that sits a proper site pump: 0.53kW, a cast aluminium body and cast iron casing, a polyurethane vortex impeller that shrugs off the grit that collects in plant rooms, and 11 metres of head to reach street level from a deep basement.

Automatic operation without a control panel

On a commercial site, the panel is usually more trouble than the pump.

A conventional automatic installation at this flow rate means a separate level control, an enclosure, a fused supply, an electrician to terminate it and a commissioning record. That is days of lead time and a cost that often exceeds the pump.

The crab floor sensor replaces all of it. It sits flat on the floor on its own lead, closes the circuit at 20mm and opens it at 10mm. Nothing to calibrate, nothing that fails in a way a caretaker cannot diagnose by picking it up and looking at it.

Put the sensor at the low point of a plant room floor or in the corner of a lift pit where water gathers, and put the pump where the discharge run works.

Three items and it is a working installation. The pump supplies its own 25mm hose tail and its own non-return valve, so there are no extra fittings to buy. Reinforced suction and delivery hose rather than layflat, because in a plant room it has to hold its shape, run past pipework and not fold shut where something is stacked against it.

The non-return valve is built into the pump

On a fixed installation with a vertical lift, backflow is what wears a standby pump out. The SPK530A deals with it internally.

With 11 metres of head available, there can be a substantial column of water standing in the discharge hose while the pump runs. On a pump without a check valve, the moment the sensor drops and the pump stops, that column runs straight back down into the room it came from. The level rises, the sensor sees 20mm again, and the pump restarts on its own returned water. That cycle can repeat for hours, and frequent starts are what takes the life out of a motor.

The SPK530A has an integral swing check valve in the discharge, so water that has been lifted stays lifted. Nothing to buy, nothing to plumb in, nothing fitted the wrong way round. For an installed pump that may sit idle for months and then run unattended overnight, that is the single feature that decides how long it lasts.

What flow will I actually get at my lift?

Maximum flow and maximum head are the two ends of a pump curve and you never get both together. The figures below are read off the published SPK530A curve and include the friction in the 10m of 25mm hose supplied. Vertical lift means the height from the water surface up to wherever the hose discharges.

Calculated from the published SPK530A performance curve at n=2860 r/min, with hose friction by Hazen-Williams at C=130 across the 10m of 25mm hose supplied. In practical terms: at a 3m lift this kit clears roughly 5,650 litres an hour, so a 100m² plant room under 50mm of water, some 5,000 litres, is gone inside the hour. On the slow ingress most basements actually get, it will hold the level at 10mm indefinitely and nobody will ever see standing water.

This kit is the one for an installed, unattended commercial application. It is the same pump as our Trade & Hire Kit, but made up for leaving in place rather than carrying about: the sensor does the switching, and there are no cam couplings because you connect it once. If the pump is going in and out of a van, buy the Trade & Hire Kit instead, since it clears to 1mm on manual and its quick-release couplings are what a hire fleet actually needs.

Water quality limits

Clean and slightly dirty water, solids to 5mm. The polyurethane vortex impeller is specified to resist abrasive silt and sand, which is why this pump holds its output on gritty plant room water. It is not a sewage pump. It is not intended for raw sewage, heavily contaminated water, or liquids containing corrosive substances, fats, oils, salts, or flammable or explosive material. It does not treat or filter water, so nothing it moves is drinking water.

Setting it up

Prime the pump before the first start. Fill the casing with clean water through the outlet until it reaches the top, roughly 2 litres, then run it for 3 to 10 minutes to confirm it is operating smoothly. Skipping this is the most common reason a new pump appears not to perform. Prime it again after any long period out of service.

Set the discharge orientation before you install. Undo the two bolts, turn the connector horizontal or vertical to suit the pipe run, and refit. Getting the outlet pointing the right way improves the flow you actually get.

Site the sensor where water reaches first, flat on the surface with clear space around it.

Run the discharge to a permanent outfall. The check valve is already in the pump, so there is nothing to add at the outlet. Fix the hose along its route so it cannot be dragged into the water or pulled off the tail, take it to a gully, drain or channel that will still be clear in a year, and keep the run as straight as the room allows.

Record it and test it. On a commercial site, put the pump on the planned maintenance schedule: test the sensor twice a year, flush the pump through with clean water after it has run on silty water, and check the discharge route is still clear.

Electrical safety and installation

The supply connection must stay dry and above any credible water level.

Connect the pump to a supply fitted with a residual current device, and keep the connection out of the wet area entirely. Supply voltage must stay within ±5% of 230V, which is tighter than a domestic pump. If the pump is run from a generator, keep it on its own set so that load changes elsewhere cannot take the supply outside tolerance.

Start the pump standing on a surface rather than suspended, as it moves as it starts. Lift and lower it on a rope tied to the handle rather than by the cable, which on a 14kg pump matters.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a control panel or an electrician?

No. The crab floor sensor is self-contained and the pump arrives assembled with a 10m cable. There is nothing to terminate and nothing to commission. That is the saving against a conventional automatic installation at this flow rate, which normally needs a separate level control, an enclosure and an electrician to wire it in. The supply itself still needs to be RCD protected and kept dry.

How low does it clear?

10mm on automatic, which is the sensor's switch-off level and the lowest of any automatic pump we sell. For comparison, a conventional float on a compact automatic typically stops at 25mm, and some larger automatic pumps do not stop until 70mm. Mounting the sensor vertically holds the pump running continuously and takes the level lower still, though in that position nothing stops it, so do not leave unattended.

Do I need to add a non-return valve?

No. The SPK530A has an integral swing check valve built into the discharge, so the water standing in the hose stays there when the pump switches off instead of running back and re-triggering the sensor. There is no separate valve to buy, no extra hose tail, and nothing that can be fitted the wrong way round. On a fixed installation with a vertical lift that is the feature that stops a standby pump short-cycling itself to failure.

Is 25mm hose big enough?

For a short run it is, and it matches the pump outlet so nothing needs adapting. On a longer run or a higher lift the hose becomes the limit rather than the pump: at a 3m lift over the 10m supplied you get around 94 L/min.

Does it need priming?

Yes. Fill the casing with clean water through the outlet, about 2 litres, then run it for 3 to 10 minutes before putting it into service. Prime it again after any long period standing.

Which voltage is it?

230V, with a tolerance of ±5%. For 110V site work, our Trade & Hire Kit uses the manual SPK530, which is available in both 110V and 230V.

Can it be left installed permanently?

Yes, and that is what it is for. Sited in a plant room or lift pit with the sensor at the low point, it will hold the level for long periods without attention. Put it on the planned maintenance schedule and test the sensor twice a year.

Will it cope with water arriving in bursts?

It will run, though water arriving suddenly makes any automatic pump start and stop more often, and frequent starts work a motor harder than steady running. Where inflow is heavy and intermittent, either monitor it or mount the sensor vertically and let it run through continuously. If inflow regularly exceeds around 6,000 litres an hour, the High-Flow Basement Kit is the better specification.

How is this different from the Trade & Hire Kit?

Same pump family, different job. This kit is the automatic version made up to be installed and left: the sensor switches it, and the hose connects once. The Trade & Hire Kit uses the manual SPK530 with cam couplings for quick connection and disconnection, clears to 1mm with an operative present, and comes in 110V as well as 230V. If the pump lives in a van, buy that one.
