Exclusive to Flood and Water Pumps the Stream SPK530A is the automatic version of our heavy-duty puddle sucker. It is the same 0.53 kW pump, supplied with a crab floor sensor that starts it at 20 mm of water and stops it at 10 mm. Set the pump down, put the sensor where the water gathers, plug it in, and it manages the water on its own.

A solid cast aluminium body, cast iron casing and polyurethane vortex impeller are what make it a site pump rather than a domestic one. The vortex impeller resists wear from sand and silt, so output holds up across a full season on gritty water instead of tailing off. It moves up to 170 litres per minute and lifts 11 metres.

How a crab floor sensor works

The sensor sits flat on the floor, on its own lead, and reads the water where the water actually is.

Once the depth reaches roughly 20 mm the sensor closes the circuit and the pump runs. When the level falls back to about 10 mm the sensor opens and the pump stops. 

For the last few millimetres, the sensor can be positioned vertically. That holds the circuit closed so the pump runs continuously and takes the level down to its minimum, which is how you finish a clear-out. Stay with the pump while it is set this way, because in that position the sensor is not stopping it.

What flow will I actually get at my lift?

Maximum flow and maximum head are the two ends of a pump curve, and you never get both together. The figures below are read off the published SPK530A curve and already include the friction loss in the length of hose stated, so find your vertical lift and read across. Vertical lift means the height from the water surface up to wherever the hose discharges.

Calculated from the published SPK530A performance curve at n=2860 r/min in the pump manual, with hose friction by Hazen-Williams at C=130 for smooth-bore hose. Flow already includes the loss in the hose length shown, so read your vertical lift straight off the table. Bends, kinks, worn hose and adaptors all cost a little more. Which Stream puddle pump?

The SPK530A is the one to buy if you need real volume and you cannot be there to switch it on. It moves two and a half times what the SPP2-4A does and lifts almost twice as high, and the sensor means it covers a site overnight without anyone on it. If you will be standing with the pump, the manual SPK530 gets the surface drier and costs less.

Water quality limits

Clean and slightly dirty water, solids to 5 mm. The polyurethane vortex impeller is specified to resist abrasive silt and sand, which is why this pump lasts on site water. It is not a sewage pump. It is not intended for raw sewage, heavily contaminated water, or liquids containing corrosive substances, fats, oils, salts, or flammable or explosive material. It does not treat or filter water, so nothing it moves is drinking water.

Setting it up, and how to prime it

The discharge is 25 mm, 1 inch. Fit the supplied hose tail, secure it with a clip, and set the outlet orientation before you install the hose: undo the two bolts, turn the connector horizontal or vertical to suit the hose run, and refit. This saves fighting a kinked hose down a shaft, and getting the outlet pointing the right way improves the flow you actually get.

Prime the pump before the first start. Fill the casing with clean water through the outlet until it reaches the top, roughly 2 litres, then run the pump for 3 to 10 minutes to confirm it is operating smoothly. Prime it again after any long period out of service, and drain the priming water before storing it when not in use.

Site the sensor where the water reaches first, flat on the surface with clear space around it, and check the lead is long enough to reach that spot from wherever the pump sits. 

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a control panel or an electrician?

No. The crab floor sensor is self-contained and the pump arrives assembled with a 10 m cable. There is nothing to terminate and nothing to commission. That is the saving compared with a conventional automatic pump at this flow rate, which normally needs a separate level control, an enclosure and an electrician to wire it in.

How low will it pump?

Down to 10 mm on automatic, because that is the sensor off-level. Mounting the sensor vertically holds the pump running continuously and takes the level lower still, which is how you finish a clear-out. Stay with the pump when it is set that way. If clearing to 1 mm is the job, the manual SPK530 is the better choice.

Will it cope with rainwater coming in bursts?

It will run in those conditions, and the sensor gives you two ways to handle them well. Where water arrives in short bursts the pump can complete a full cycle in moments and then start again a few minutes later, and frequent starts work a motor harder than steady running does. In that situation either keep an eye on the pump, or mount the sensor vertically and run it through continuously. Both get the same result and both are kinder to the pump.

Does it need priming?

Yes. Fill the casing with clean water through the outlet, about 2 litres, then run it for 3 to 10 minutes before putting it to work. Skipping this is the most common reason a new pump appears not to perform.

Which voltage is it?

230V, for 110V site work, the manual SPK530 is available in both 110V and 230V.

Can I leave it installed permanently?

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons to buy it. Sited in a sump pit or chamber with the sensor at the low point, it will hold the level for long periods without attention. Where the pump is being installed as permanent or standby flood protection, get the levels, flows and discharge route looked at properly first.

What hose does it take?

A 25 mm, 1 inch tail is supplied. If pumping up and out over walls, up stairs or out letterboxes we suggest a suction and delivery hose that won't kink. 

How does it compare with the SPP2-4A?

The SPP2-4A uses the same crab floor sensor in a 3.3 kg pump at 70 L/min and 6 m of head. It is the one for a small cellar or pit on a budget. The SPK530A is for volume and lift, and for water carrying more grit.

Which Hose Should I use with my Water Pump?
