For most homes, the best small flood pump is the Stream SPP2-4, one of the UK's best-selling puddle pumps. It is light, affordable and quick to deploy, and it clears shallow flood water down to a low level, which is exactly what a domestic flood needs. If you want one pump in the shed for peace of mind, this is the one we recommend most often.

What makes a good small flood pump?

Four things matter when the water is on the floor and you need it gone:

  • It clears shallow water. A small flood pump should be a puddle pump, designed to sit on the floor and pump the water down to a few millimetres, not leave a depth of water behind like an ordinary submersible would.
  • It is light and easy to store. You want to grab it, carry it and drop it in without a struggle, and keep it out of the way between uses.
  • It moves enough water. For a domestic flood, a flow in the region of 70 litres per minute clears a room at a sensible pace.
  • It plugs in. A standard 230V pump with no priming means you can deploy it in seconds.

Why the Stream SPP2-4

The Stream SPP2-4 ticks all four. It weighs just 3kg, runs on a normal 230V socket at 100W, and moves up to 70 litres per minute with a 6 metre head, plenty to lift water out to a drain or down the garden. It has a 1 inch (25mm) outlet and passes small solids up to 3mm, and being a puddle pump it clears shallow standing water rather than stopping several centimetres up. It is affordable, reliable and the best-selling puddle pump in the UK for good reason: it does the one job most people need doing, quickly and without fuss.

When to size up from a small flood pump

The SPP2-4 is ideal for a one-off, attended clear-up of a room, garage or cellar. Step up if:

  • You want it to run unattended. For automatic, hands-off protection, choose an automatic puddle pump such as the EVAK Residox 400 Automatic or a Tsurumi LSC1.4S Automatic, which start themselves as water rises.
  • The area is large, or the water is dirty. A bigger or higher-flow pump clears large volumes faster, and a dirty water pump copes with muddy, debris-laden flooding.
  • You need to pump high or far. A longer lift or hose run needs more head.

How to use it

Place the pump in the lowest point of the water, attach a hose to route the water to a drain or lower ground, and plug it in. It will pump the standing water down to a shallow level in a single pass. For a repeat-flooding spot, an automatic model means you do not have to be there to switch it on.

The pump can also be fully submersed in water.
