Choosing the right pump fittings

Pump installations typically use a combination of flexible hose and rigid pipework, so most setups need fittings from more than one category. Knowing which goes where saves time and prevents leaks.

Best-selling pump fittings

  • Hose Clips: Secure hoses tightly to prevent leaks. Always use two clips per hose tail connection on suction lines. Sizes range from 8-12mm to 190-210mm.
  • Hose Joiners: Connect two lengths of hose. Choose a joiner that matches your hose internal diameter and pair with two hose clips per side.
  • BSP Hose Tails: Connect flexible hose to threaded ports on pumps and pipework. Available in brass and polypropylene with male or female BSP threads.

Fittings buying tips

  • Match the thread. All our fittings use BSP (British Standard Pipe) threads in standard sizes from 1/2 inch to 3 inch. Check your pump's port size before ordering.
  • Choose the right material. Brass and galvanised iron suit dirty water and outdoor use. Polypropylene is lighter, corrosion-proof and ideal for clean water transfer.
  • Always pair hose tails with two hose clips. One clip is rarely enough on suction lines where pressure changes can loosen connections.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are most pumps connected?

Most pumps connect using a hose tail with either a male or female BSP thread to match the pump outlet, and a hose clip to secure the hose to the tail.

What is male and female thread?

Male threads are on the outside of a fitting, female threads are on the inside. A male fitting screws into a female fitting. To connect to a pump, check whether the pump outlet has internal threads (female, you need a male hose tail) or external threads (male, you need a female hose tail).

What is BSP thread?

BSP stands for British Standard Pipe, the threading used on most UK water pumps and fittings. All fittings on this page use BSP threads in standard sizes from 1/2 inch to 3 inch. Match the BSP size on your pump outlet to the BSP size on your hose tail or fitting.

Do you stock anything to manage pollution?

Yes, our Sediment Filter for Pollutant Capture is Environment Agency approved for treating site discharge water before it enters drains or watercourses. It removes silt, sediment and particulates from pumped water on construction, dewatering and civils projects where discharge consent conditions apply.

What is a foot valve and do I need one?

A foot valve is a non-return valve with an integrated strainer fitted to the bottom of a suction hose.

It keeps the suction line primed between pump cycles and stops debris entering the pump.

Foot valves are essential for any pump drawing water from a tank, well or open source where the pump sits above the water level.
