Pond pumps are submersible water pumps designed to run continuously, circulate pond water, power filtration, and drive water features such as fountains and cascades. Unlike standard drainage pumps, they use non-clog impellers and non-toxic oil so they can run safely in ponds containing fish, plants and other aquatic life. Pond pumps are submersible water pumps built for continuous duty in ponds, water features and ornamental water displays.
They are responsible for core jobs in any healthy pond: circulating the water or moving water through a filter to keep it clean, and driving features such as fountains, spouts, waterfalls and cascades.
Because they sit permanently in water containing fish, plants and bacteria, pond pumps are built differently from general-purpose submersibles.
A correctly sized pond pump is one of the most important pieces of equipment in any pond. It directly affects water quality, oxygen levels, and the health of fish and plants.
It is important to use a purpose-built pond pump rather than a general drainage or sump pump. The differences matter:

As pond pumps are submersible pumps, they are commonly used for:
They are used wherever water needs to be circulated, filtered or displayed in a setting that contains aquatic life or runs continuously.
Most pond pumps are submersible: the pump sits below the water at the deepest point of the pond, drawing water in through a strainer, passing it through a non-clog impeller, and pushing it out under pressure.
Some use surface pumps instead, sited next to the pond and drawing water through a suction hose. The Speroni SWIMM is the example in our range. Surface pumps are typically chosen for very large ponds, natural swimming ponds, and installations where access for servicing matters.
Whichever style of pump is used, it is doing one of three jobs:
Many ponds have a combination. Larger ponds often run two pumps, one dedicated to circulation or filtration and one to the feature, to keep both jobs efficient.
The pump's head is the maximum vertical height it can lift water if there were no other losses. It tells you how high a fountain or waterfall the pump can drive. As a working rule, every 10 metres of horizontal pipework costs roughly 1 metre of head, so account for both height and run length when choosing a model.
A healthy pond ecosystem depends on dissolved oxygen.
Moving water draws oxygen into the pond and supports the beneficial bacteria that break down fish waste, leaf litter and other organic matter. Without circulation:
The bigger the fish stock, the more critical aeration becomes, which is why koi ponds need far more turnover than wildlife ponds.
The right pump is the one that turns over the full volume of your pond at the correct frequency for the type of pond.
Step 1. Calculate pond volume
For a rectangular pond: length x width x depth (in metres) = volume in m³.
For a circular pond: V = πr²h (Pi x radius² x depth).
Multiply m³ by 1,000 to convert to litres.
Step 2. Match circulation rate to pond type
Wildlife or natural pond
Full water turnover every 2 hours
Goldfish pond
Full water turnover every 1.5 hours
Koi pond
Full water turnover every 1 hour
Step 3. Calculate required flow rate
Pond volume in litres ÷ turnover time in minutes = required flow rate (litres/min).
Step 4. Add head for features
If the pump is also driving a waterfall, fountain or cascade, add the vertical lift plus 1m of head per 10m of horizontal hose run.
