High-Performance Pool Pump for Larger Residential & Commercial Systems
The Plastica Argonaut range is a premium swimming pool pump, designed for larger residential pools, high-demand systems and commercial applications where performance, durability and continuous operation are critical.
This is the top tier of the Plastica range, built with higher-grade materials, larger capacity, and designed to handle more demanding installations than entry-level or mid-range pumps. The Argonaut is the big brother to the Plastica AG Series range.
Manufactured and tested in the UK, the Argonaut is engineered for long-term, reliable operation.
Where the Argonaut Range Fits
The Argonaut is best suited to:
- Larger residential swimming pools
- High-end domestic installations
- Commercial or semi-commercial pool systems
- Saltwater pools and aggressive chemical environments
- Systems requiring continuous or heavy-duty operation
If you’re comparing ranges:
-
iFlo = entry level
-
AG Series = mid-range residential
- Argonaut = high-performance / heavy-duty
Why Choose the Argonaut?
- High flow rates (up to 32m³/hr) for larger systems
- Self-priming up to 3 metres
- Designed for continuous 24-hour operation
- Suitable for high saltwater concentrations
- Quiet running (~60dB) for its performance class
- Available in single phase and 3-phase options
This is a pump designed for systems where reliability matters, not just basic circulation.
Built for Demanding Environments
The Argonaut uses higher-grade materials throughout, making it suitable for long-term use in harsh conditions:
- AISI 316 stainless steel mechanical seal
- Stainless steel motor shaft
- 316 stainless steel nuts, bolts and fixings
- Glass-filled polypropylene pump body
Compatible with:
- Chlorine systems
- Bromine
- Iodine
- Saltwater pools
This level of material specification is what separates the Argonaut from lower-cost alternatives.
Performance and Model Range
Motor sizes range from:
- 0.33hp (0.24kW)
to
- 2.0hp (1.5kW)
Flow rates typically range from:
- 13m³/hr to 32m³/hr, depending on system layout and pipework
As with all pool pumps, correct sizing is essential. Larger is not always better, the system should be matched to the pool volume and filtration setup. Use the calculator on our swimming pool pumps page to size on flow and head.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size Argonaut pump do I need?
Size on flow and head, not horsepower. Aim to turn the whole pool over once every eight hours at your system's real head, then choose the smallest model that meets it. On larger and commercial systems oversizing wastes energy and can push water through the filter too fast to clean it. Use the calculator on our swimming pool pumps page, or call us on 0115 987 0358 and we will size it with you.
Should I choose single-phase or three-phase?
Single-phase 230V suits most domestic installations. Three-phase 400V is for larger or commercial systems with a three-phase supply and tends to run more efficiently at higher powers. Three-phase pumps must be checked for correct rotation with a phase rotation meter on installation, as running them backwards can cause damage and void the warranty. If you are not sure what supply you have, ask your electrician or call us before ordering.
Is the Argonaut suitable for salt water pools?
Yes, including high salt concentrations. It uses an AISI 316 stainless steel mechanical seal, a stainless motor shaft, 316 stainless fixings and a glass-filled polypropylene body, so it resists the corrosion that degrades lower-grade pumps in salt-chlorinated and aggressive chemical environments.
How is the Argonaut different from the AG and iFlo?
The iFlo is the entry-level pump for smaller domestic pools, and the AG Series is the mid-range residential choice. The Argonaut is the high-performance, heavy-duty option, with higher flow (up to 32m³/hr), self-priming to 3 metres, 316 stainless fixings and single or three-phase models, built for larger pools and continuous duty.
Is the Argonaut self-priming?
Yes, up to 3 metres, so it can be sited above pool water level. For reliable priming, keep the suction pipe short and air-tight, fill the strainer basket before start-up and make sure all valves are open. Never run the pump dry, as this damages the seal.
What does the Argonaut need for installation?
It should be bolted to a solid base to limit vibration, sited somewhere accessible with good drainage, and fitted with a non-return valve directly after the pump to stop reverse flow. Electrically it must be on its own circuit, installed by a qualified electrician, and protected by an RCD or GFCI rated at no more than 30mA. It is supplied with 63mm (2") unions plus reducers for 50mm (1.5") pipework.
What warranty does the Argonaut come with?
Three years on the pump body, two years on the motor and one year on the mechanical seal. Note that allowing the pump to freeze or run dry will void the warranty.
