Speroni SA(M) Sea-Water Pump
Built for the job
Submersible 316 stainless steel pump for seawater, saltwater, and aggressive liquids.
The SA and SAM are Speroni’s submersible seawater pump. Every wetted component, from the pump casing through to the impeller, shaft, and level switch bracket, is built in 316 grade stainless steel. This is the highest-specification marine-grade stainless in Speroni’s range, and it exists for one reason: to give the pump a fighting chance against chloride corrosion in seawater.
Most submersible pumps fail fast in seawater. Standard cast iron rusts out within months. 304 stainless pits and corrodes under chloride attack. 316 stainless contains molybdenum, which dramatically improves chloride resistance and is the standard material for marine applications worldwide.
- An M at the end of the model name means 230V single-phase.
- No M means 400V three-phase.
Where is the Speroni SA(M) Pump Used
- Marine and coastal industrial drainage.
- Harbour and marina pump-out installations.
- Saltwater cesspool and effluent pumping.
- Seawater aquaculture and marine research.
- Industrial processing with chloride-containing liquids.
- Drainage of waters with particularly aggressive chemical content.
- Pumping saline or corrosive industrial effluent where 316 stainless is required.
Choosing Between the Different Variants
The SA(M) range comes in four variants. Three things differ between them: the size, the voltage, and whether the pump is automatic or manual.
Size: The SA 316-80 is the smaller pump: 0.6kW motor, 200 l/min flow, 9m head. The SA 316-130 is larger: 1kW motor, 400 l/min flow, 12m head. For light marine drainage and small coastal installations, the 80 is usually enough. For harbour work, higher-flow industrial drainage, or where the discharge run is long, choose the 130.
Voltage: Models prefixed SAM are 230V single-phase. Models prefixed SA are 400V three-phase. This follows the standard Speroni naming convention: the M suffix means single-phase.
Automatic v manual: Models with an /S suffix (SAM 316-80/S, SAM 316-130/S) are automatic: they come with a pendant-style float.
Models without /S (SA 316-80, SA 316-130) are manual.
The automatic /S variants are only available in 230V single-phase; the 400V three-phase models are manual only.
If you need an automatic pump on a three-phase installation, use a manual SA model with an external float switch wired into a direct-on-line starter.
Both come in 230V single-phase (SAM) and 400V three-phase (SA).
Single-phase versions are automatic with a pendant float switch; three-phase versions are manual and need an external controller.
For most marine and coastal work the 80 is adequate. For harbour installations, higher-flow industrial pumping, or where the discharge head is significant, the 130 is the safer choice.
SA(M) vs KS1100/PA
Both are Speroni seawater pumps, but they do different jobs.
The SA(M) is a Submersible Pump: it drops into the seawater you are moving.
The Speroni KS1100/PA is a Surface Pump: it sits dry and draws seawater up through a suction pipe. Choose SA(M) for drainage, pumping out, and installations where the pump can be submerged. Choose KS1100/PA for deck washdown, portable seawater transfer, and applications where you cannot immerse the pump.
35mm Free Passage
The SA(M) has a 35mm free passage, which means it can handle seawater that contains small debris, organic material, or suspended solids up to about 1.5 inches. It is not a grinder pump and will not process large solids, but it is perfectly at home in real-world marine drainage where the water contains seaweed, small debris, and biological matter rather than being perfectly clean.
Even 316 stainless steel cannot be considered fully corrosion-proof in seawater. Chloride concentration, evaporation, temperature, and aeration all affect corrosion rates, and the guarantee period for the SA(M) relates to mechanical operation rather than covering all possible seawater conditions. The SA(M) is the best material specification Speroni offers for seawater use; it is also the only Speroni submersible suitable for the application. The guarantee period for these models relates to the mechanical operation and may not cover all seawater conditions.
