Empties a domestic swimming pool at around 130 litres per minute, in water that would corrode an ordinary pump.
This FPS Engineered™ kit pairs the Mizar submersible pump with 10 m of 32 mm reinforced suction and delivery hose, a 32 mm male hose tail and a stainless-steel clip. Lower the pump to the deepest point of the pool, run the hose to your discharge point and switch on.
The Mizar 60 is built from high-grade 304 stainless steel, which is the grade that resists chlorides. That matters here, because pool water is exactly the liquid that pits ordinary stainless steel and rusts cast iron. Even so, the pump must be rinsed through with fresh water after every use. This is a drainage pump, not a pool pump
Two completely different jobs, two completely different pumps.
Circulation and filtration pumps keep the water in the pool clean. They sit dry alongside the pool, draw water through a suction line, push it through the filter and return it. They are plumbed permanently into the pool's pipework, sized to turn the whole pool over every eight hours or so, and they run day in, day out against the back pressure of a filter. Drainage pumps empty the pool. This one is submersible, portable and manually switched, and it discharges to waste rather than through a filter. You use it for a handful of hours once a season, to drop the level for repairs, to empty for winter, or to clear a pool that has been left standing. It cannot be plumbed into a filtration circuit and it will not replace your pool pump.

The Mizar 60 in this kit is manual. It has no float switch and will not stop on its own.
That is deliberate. A float switch would cut the pump off well before the pool was empty, which defeats the purpose. The trade-off is that you have to be there, and emptying a full pool is not a quick job. Budget several hours and check on it periodically.
Switch off at the plug once the water stops flowing. Running dry will damage the pump. Do not leave it running unattended or overnight.

How the kit connects
The Mizar 60 has a female 32 mm outlet. The supplied 32 mm male hose tail screws straight into it, and the hose pushes fully over the ribbed end of the tail and is secured with the stainless-steel clip. The far end of the hose runs open to your discharge point, so there is nothing to connect there.
Get the discharge end lower than the water level in the pool if you can. Once the hose is full, gravity does some of the work for you, and on a long drain that is worth having. It also means that when you switch off, the water standing in the hose will run out rather than back into the pool.

How long will my pool take?
Work out your volume in litres by multiplying length × width × average depth in metres, then multiplying by 1,000. Typical UK pools, at a 2 m lift:

Estimated using the published Mizar 60 curve and Hazen-Williams friction for 32 mm bore, with the hose discharging freely. Flow tails off as the level drops and the lift increases, so a deep pool takes slightly longer than the average figure suggests. Actual times depend on pool volume, lift, hose routing and any limit on how fast you can discharge. On a larger pool, plan the drain across two sessions rather than one very long one.

How to drain your pool
- Stop dosing chemicals several days beforehand and let the chlorine or bromine level fall, then test it before you pump.
- Check where the water is going and confirm it is allowed. See the discharge guidance below.
- Lower the pump to the deepest point of the pool, clear of the main drain and away from any sediment on the floor.
- Run the hose to your discharge point, getting the open end as low as you can.
- Plug into an socket well clear of the water, keeping the plug dry and off the ground.
- Switch on and monitor. Check on the discharge periodically and watch the level as it drops.
- Switch off at the plug as soon as the flow stops. Do not let it run dry.
- Rinse the pump and hose through with clean fresh water before you put them away. This step is not optional. See below.
Rinse the pump through after every use
This is the single most important thing you can do to keep the pump serviceable.
Chlorine, bromine and salt do their damage over time, not in the few hours the pump is running. What causes problems is treated water left sitting inside the pump body and hose while it is in storage, where it concentrates as it evaporates and attacks seals, the shaft and eventually even 316 stainless. A pump put away wet after one drain can be pitted by the time you next need it.
How to do it. Stand the pump in a bucket, water butt or trug of clean fresh water, deep enough to cover the inlet, and run it for two or three minutes with the hose discharging to waste. That flushes fresh water through the impeller, the body and the full length of the hose. Then lift it out, let it drain fully, and store it dry with the hose uncoiled or loosely coiled so no water is trapped in it.
Do the same after a saltwater pool, where it matters more. Corrosion damage caused by treated water left standing in the pump is not a manufacturing fault and is not covered by the warranty.
Where to discharge the water
A full pool is tens of thousands of litres of treated water. Where it goes matters.
Chlorinated water must not reach a stream, river, ditch, pond or surface water drain. Chlorine is acutely toxic to fish and invertebrates, and a surface water drain in most cases discharges straight to a watercourse. Doing so can be an offence.
Stop dosing several days before you drain and let the chlorine level fall, then test it. Levels below around 0.05 mg/l are generally considered safe for the environment, and sunlight will bring an untreated pool down over a few days. A neutralising agent will do it faster.
The foul sewer is normally the right destination, but a domestic connection cannot take 45,000 litres at 130 litres per minute without risk of backing up. Drain in stages, throttle the flow if you can, or spread the water slowly over your own grass or planted ground once dechlorinated. For salt-chlorinated pools, or anything above domestic scale, check with your water company before you start.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need to rinse the pump out after using it?
Yes, every time. Treated water left standing inside the pump concentrates as it evaporates and attacks the seals and shaft, and given long enough it will pit even 316 stainless. Stand the pump in a bucket of clean fresh water and run it for two or three minutes with the hose discharging to waste, then let it drain and store it dry. Corrosion from treated water left inside the pump is not covered by the warranty.
Will this pump run my pool's filtration system?
No. Filtration needs a surface-mounted circulation pump plumbed into the pool's pipework and sized to turn the water over against the resistance of your filter. This is a portable submersible pump for emptying to waste. See our swimming pool pumps for circulation and filtration.
How long will it take to empty my pool?
Just under six hours for a typical 8 × 4 m in-ground pool, and about three hours for a small 6 × 3 m one. Multiply length × width × average depth in metres, then by 1,000, to get your volume in litres, and divide by 130 litres per minute.
Do I need any other fittings?
No. The pump has a female 32 mm outlet and the kit supplies the matching male hose tail and clip, so it connects with nothing else to buy. If you later want to extend the run, you need a 32 mm hose joiner and a second clip, and every extra metre costs a little flow.
What happens when I switch the pump off?
The water standing in the hose runs out, either forwards to your discharge point if that end is lower, or back into the pool if it is higher. It is around eight litres, which is nothing against a pool, so it makes no practical difference to the drain. Getting the open end of the hose low simply means it empties the right way.
Can I leave it running overnight?
No. The pump is manual and will not stop when the water runs out, so it needs supervising. On a large pool, split the drain across two sessions rather than leaving it unattended.
Is it suitable for a saltwater pool?
Yes for the duration of a drain. The 304 stainless construction resists chlorides which is why we chose it. Rinsing through afterwards matters even more with salt than with chlorine, because salt residue crystallises as it dries. For permanent duty in salt water, see our salt water pumps.
Will it get the pool completely empty?
It will take the level down to the pump's minimum operating depth, which leaves a shallow film on the floor to be squeegeed or wet-vacuumed out. If you need a floor taken back to almost nothing, a puddle pump clears down to a few millimetres.
Can I use it for a hot tub or spa instead?
Yes, though it is more pump than a hot tub needs. Our hot tub kit uses a smaller puddle pump with 6 m of hose and drains a typical tub in about 25 minutes.
