Tsurumi OM5 & OMA5 Submersible Pumps – Compact, Reliable Drainage for Sumps & Basements

The Tsurumi OM5 submersible pump range is a proven and dependable solution for drainage in basements, sumps, chambers, and catchment pits, suitable for both domestic and industrial applications. Superseding the popular OM4 model, the OM5 builds on its predecessor’s reputation with improved efficiency, reliability, and compact design.

Fully submersible and easy to install, the OM5 is a long-standing favourite with water companies and utilities, valued for its performance and durability.

Manual & Automatic Models

The OM5 range is available in manual and automatic versions, allowing you to choose the level of control that best suits your application.

Manual Models

  • OM5 Industrial 110V
  • OM5 Industrial 230V
  • OM5 Domestic 230V

Manual pumps require switching on and off at the mains and are best suited to monitored or controlled installations, or when connected to other float switches in a monitored system.

Automatic Models

  • OMA5 Industrial 110V Auto
  • OMA5 Industrial 230V Auto
  • OMA5 Domestic 230V Auto

Automatic models turn themselves on and off as water levels rise and fall, providing passive operation in unattended sumps and basements.

Why the Tube Float Switch Makes the OMA5 Stand Out

For automatic operation in tight or narrow sumps, the OMA5 uses a vertical tube float switch instead of a traditional pendant float. This design offers major practical advantages:

  • Reliable operation in confined spaces
  • Accurate and consistent defined on/off levels
  • No snagging on chamber walls or pipework

Off and On levels:

  • ON: 222mm
  • OFF: 61mm

This makes the OMA5 a go-to choice where pendant floats would be unreliable or impractical.

The diagram below illustrates the advantages of the tube float design and why it performs so well in confined spaces compared with standard pendant floats.

Industrial vs Domestic Versions – What’s the Difference?

Industrial models are designed for permanent or semi-permanent installations in sumps, chambers, and basements. As such, they are supplied without a plug or hosetail and are intended to be hard-wired.

Domestic models (230V only) are supplied ready to use and include:

  • 3-pin plug
  • Hosetail
  • Hose clip

This makes the domestic OM5 ideal for straightforward residential installations.

All models are supplied with a 10-metre heavy-duty power cable.
Please note:

  • Industrial versions do not include a plug, hosetail, or hose clip
  • Domestic versions include all three as standard

Efficient Performance from a Compact Sump Pump

The OM5 range uses an energy-efficient 150-watt motor, delivering good flow and head for its size while keeping running costs low. Its compact size allows it to fit neatly into small sumps and chambers.

Designed to Reduce Air Locks

The OM5 range includes an integral vent valve, helping to prevent air locks during operation. This improves reliability, particularly in sump applications where air entrapment can otherwise interrupt pumping.

Durable Construction for Drainage Duties

The pump is fitted with:

  • Double mechanical silicon carbide shaft seal for long service life
  • Vortex impeller for light solids handling
  • Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) impeller, offering corrosion resistance, low weight, and efficient hydraulics

GFRP impellers reduce load on the motor and bearings, improving start-up performance and long-term reliability. The OM5 is suitable for clean and lightly contaminated water, but is not intended for ponds or water features.

HOW-TO

What is the Difference between a Manual & Automatic Water Pump?

Manual Pump - A pump that does not have a float control or pressure switch to start and stop. It will require an operator to control it.

Automatic Pump - A pump that has a float control or pressure switch to start and stop without an operator.

A float switch is a level controller that has a buoyant, water-tight device that lies
on a liquid, actuating a micro-switch when the level rises or falls, turning a pump on or off.

Which Hose Should I use with my Water Pump?

Layflat hose is very affordable but can kink. Depending on your use, you may be better using a reinforced suction delivery hose for your needs.

Suction delivery hose is ideal for pumping up stairs or over obstacles.

Jonathan Martin explains the differences to help you choose which hose is best for your scenario.
