The engineer behind Flood & Water Pumps

Simon Crowther.

Flood & Water Pumps was founded by Simon Crowther, a Civil Engineer and Chartered Water and Environmental Manager known across the industry as The Flood Guy®.

Why we exist

It started with a flooded home.

In the summer of 2007, Simon's family home flooded. The family was out of the house for around nine months while it was repaired, with an insurance claim of roughly £120,000. That experience shaped everything that followed.

Working in flood risk afterwards, Simon kept seeing the same thing in flooded homes: the wrong pump, badly specified, or no pump at all. Good pumps were hidden behind trade counters and sold without advice, often by people who had never had to use one in anger.

He set out to change that, to make the right pumps and the knowledge to choose them genuinely accessible. Flood & Water Pumps is the result: an online pump store run by engineers, carrying its own range alongside the leading manufacturers, and the sector's first real investment in product education videos.

We are real people looking to make a difference, not a faceless drop shipping company or a catalogue sales firm.
SIMON CROWTHER
Engineering, not just floods

The same rigour behind every pump.

Simon's name is known in flood risk, but the same engineering runs through everything Flood & Water Pumps supplies. Sizing a swimming pool pump for the right turnover, choosing a sewage pump that passes solids without blocking, matching a borehole pump to depth and head, or specifying a dewatering pump for a construction site are all engineering decisions.

The team applies the same method to each: understand the job, match flow, head and duty, then recommend a pump that will actually do it. Flooding is where it started, but ponds, pools, drainage and waste water all get the same thinking.

Whether it is a flooded cellar, a blocked sewage system or a swimming pool, the question is the same: the right pump, sized properly, for the job in front of you.

Credentials

Credentials that actually matter.

FCIWEM

Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, CIWEM's highest grade of membership, awarded for demonstrable senior level excellence in the sustainable management of the environment.

C.WEM

Chartered Water and Environmental Manager, the professional benchmark for water and environment specialists.

BEng (Hons)

Civil Engineering, University of Nottingham. Also a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET).

DEFRA Roundtable

Member of DEFRA's Property Flood Resilience Roundtable and a founding member of the International Property Flood Resilience Association.

The FPS Group

Simon founded the FPS Group® in 2012. Flood & Water Pumps is its online pump store, sitting alongside Flood Protection Solutions Ltd and FPS Environmental, and engineering consultancy. Each company focuses on what it does best, and together they cover flood risk from advice to barriers to pumps.

More about Simon

Trusted beyond the warehouse.

Where Simon's expertise shows up: national media, government policy, and out on real flood projects.

Trusted by national media

When flooding hits the headlines or flood policy is debated, Simon is among the first experts the national broadcasters call. He is a preferred flood risk consultant for BBC News and Sky News, and has appeared on Channel 4, ITV News and BBC One's Rip Off Britain.

Build Back Better, launched at Parliament

In April 2022 Simon spoke at the parliamentary launch of Flood Re's Build Back Better, a world first insurance scheme that funds up to £10,000 of flood resilient repairs after a flood. He shared his own 2007 experience to make the case for building homes back stronger rather than simply putting them back as they were.

Slowing the flow at Chelsea

Simon was invited by Flood Re to their Contain the Rain garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, championing slow the flow approaches that hold rainwater where it falls and let it soak away, rather than firing it straight at a drain.

Out on site, not behind a desk

You will often find Simon on site through the group's consultancy, FPS Environmental, or supporting community flood groups around the country. It is why the advice behind these pumps comes from real world experience rather than a product catalogue.

Why these pumps

Why they make the cut.

A quick word on how these were chosen, and what to look for when picking your own.

What earns a place on the list

Every pump featured here has earned its place through real-world experience. Simon has either used it personally or seen it perform in service at properties and projects across the UK. These are pumps that start when needed, pump efficiently, pass the solids they should, and keep going under demanding conditions. When the team couldn't find a pump that delivered the performance and reliability they were looking for, they helped develop their own range to provide a better solution.
