Petrol water transfer pump kit for tanks, ponds, streams and off-grid sites

This FPS Engineered™ kit pairs the Honda WX10 with 6m of 25mm reinforced suction and delivery hose, 10m of 25mm layflat for the discharge. The pump supplies its own couplings, washers, clips and strainer, so the kit completes it.

At 6.1 kg the WX10 is the lightest pump Honda make, carried in one hand, with a 4-stroke GX25 engine that takes straight petrol with no two-stroke mixing. It moves up to 140 litres per minute and will push water 36 metres uphill, which is a lot of head for a pump this size.

Part of our wider engine driven pump and Honda ranges.

Why a surface pump needs two different hoses

A submersible sits in the water. A petrol pump sits on the bank, and has to pull the water up to itself first.

That changes everything about the hose on the intake side. As the pump draws, the pressure inside the suction hose drops below atmospheric, and an ordinary hose will simply flatten shut. Reinforced suction and delivery hose has a helix moulded into the wall that holds it open against that vacuum. Layflat on the suction side will not work at all: the pump will pull it flat and lose prime.

On the discharge side the hose is under pressure rather than vacuum, so it will hold itself open. That is where layflat belongs: it is lighter, cheaper per metre and rolls down to almost nothing for transport.

Six metres of reinforced on the suction, ten metres of layflat on the delivery. Get those the wrong way round and the pump either will not prime or you are carrying more weight than you need to.

At a glance

  • Both hoses supplied: 6m reinforced for suction, 10m layflat for delivery, with hose clips.
  • 113 litres per minute through the kit: Roughly 6,800 litres an hour at a typical 2m lift.
  • 36 metres of head: Unusually high for a 1 inch pump, so it suits distance and elevation rather than just volume.
  • 6.1 kg with a carry handle: One person lift, no trolley needed.
  • Honda GX25 4-stroke: Straight petrol, no fuel mixing, and it will run at any angle.

What's included

  • 1 × Honda WX10 petrol water pump, with hose couplings, washers, clips and suction strainer
  • 1 × 6m length of 25mm reinforced suction and delivery hose
  • 1 × 10m length of 25mm layflat delivery hose

Petrol and oil are not included. The WX10 takes straight unleaded, no mixing, and 0.1 litres of engine oil.

Add the residue pumping kit

On a flat floor, this pump on its standard strainer will leave you a few inches of standing water. The residue pumping kit takes it down to 3 mm.

It swaps the strainer for a 140 mm wide floor tool on a 4 m suction hose, and the tool can be lifted and moved from puddle to puddle with the engine still running, so you are not stopping and re-priming at every one.

Fits the 25 mm models only: Honda WX10, Tsurumi TEM-25H and Tsurumi TE2-25H.

How the kit connects, and how to prime it

Both ports on the WX10 are 25 mm, 1 inch. The reinforced hose goes on the suction side with the strainer fitted to the far end, and the layflat goes on the discharge side. Secure each with a supplied hose clip.

Fit the strainer every time. It comes with the pump and it is not optional: it keeps grit and debris out of the impeller, and on a pump with 5 mm free passage a single stone ends the job.

Prime before starting. A surface pump cannot draw air. Fill the pump casing with water through the priming plug until it is full, then start the engine. Running it dry will damage the mechanical seal within seconds.

Keep the suction lift as short as you can. The maximum recommended is 6 metres from the water surface up to the pump, and the closer you get to that figure the longer priming takes and the more flow you lose.

Expected performance

Estimated flow through the full 16m of 25mm hose supplied. Total lift is the suction lift plus the delivery lift added together, measured from the water surface to the point where the hose discharges.

Total lift Typical situation Estimated flow Per hour
2 m Butt to butt, tank to tank on the level Approx. 113 L/min Approx. 6,800 litres
5 m Stream or pond up to a garden Approx. 108 L/min Approx. 6,500 litres
10 m Up a bank, or filling a raised tank Approx. 99 L/min Approx. 5,900 litres
15 m Steep ground or a high storage tank Approx. 89 L/min Approx. 5,300 litres
20 m Serious elevation, still comfortable Approx. 77 L/min Approx. 4,600 litres

Estimated using the published WX10 curve and Hazen-Williams friction for 25 mm bore across the full 16 m of hose supplied. At 108 litres per minute a 1,000 litre IBC empties in about 9 minutes, a 200 litre water butt in under two, and a 5,000 litre pond in around three quarters of an hour. Note that the pump still delivers well at 20 m of lift, because with 36 m of head it has a great deal in reserve. Work out a specific run with our pump performance calculator.

Petrol engine safety

Never run a petrol pump indoors or in any enclosed space.

Petrol engines produce carbon monoxide, which is colourless, odourless and lethal. That rules out cellars, basements, garages with the door shut, tents, containers and covered walkways, even briefly and even with a window open. If the water is inside a building, put the pump outside and run the suction hose in, or use an electric puddle pump instead.

Stop the engine and let it cool before refuelling, keep petrol away from the hot exhaust, and site the pump on level ground clear of anything that could catch. The WX10 is rated at 86 dB(A) at the operator position, so wear hearing protection for extended use.

Which Honda pump kit?

All three are Honda 4-stroke petrol pumps. Choose by how much water you need to move.

Kit Ports Flow and head Weight Choose it when
WX10 Transfer 1 inch 140 L/min, 36 m 6.1 kg Portability and height matter more than volume
WB20 Flood & Site 2 inch 620 L/min, 32 m 21 kg The general-purpose standard for site, farm and flood
WB30 High-Flow 3 inch 1,100 L/min, 28 m 26 kg Maximum volume for large dewatering and flood

The WX10 is the only one of the three a single person carries comfortably, and it has the highest head. If you are lifting water a long way rather than moving a lot of it, it is the right pump even where a bigger one would fit.

What can I use it for?

  • Emptying water butts, IBCs, tanks, ponds and containers
  • Garden, allotment and smallholding irrigation from a stream or store
  • Water transfer where there is no mains power at all
  • Dust suppression on site and in yards
  • Filling raised tanks, troughs and header tanks uphill
  • Boats, moorings and remote pitches
  • Emergency flood response outdoors

Water quality limits

Clean and lightly debris-laden water, solids to 5 mm. Always fit the supplied strainer. The WX10 is a transfer pump, not a dewatering or trash pump: silt, sand and grit will wear it quickly, and it is not for sewage, foul water or salt water. It also does not treat or filter water, so nothing it moves is drinking water.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need this kit if the pump is sold on its own?

Because the pump is supplied without hoses, and a surface pump cannot do anything without them. It needs a reinforced suction hose that will not collapse under vacuum and a delivery hose on the other side. This kit supplies both, correctly sized, so there is nothing else to work out.

Why are the two hoses different?

The suction hose works under vacuum, so it has to be reinforced or the pump will pull it flat and lose prime. The delivery hose works under pressure, which holds it open, so layflat is fine there and it is lighter and packs down smaller.

Can I use layflat on the suction side?

No. It will collapse as soon as the pump draws, and the pump will not prime. Use the reinforced hose on the suction side and keep the layflat for delivery.

Do I have to prime it?

Yes, every time. Fill the pump casing with water through the priming plug before starting. A surface pump cannot draw air, and running dry damages the mechanical seal within seconds.

How high can it draw water up to itself?

Six metres is the maximum recommended suction lift, though shorter is always better. The closer you work to the limit, the longer priming takes and the more flow you lose.

Can I run it in a cellar or garage?

No. Petrol engines produce carbon monoxide, which is lethal in an enclosed space. Site the pump outdoors and run the suction hose in, or use an electric submersible pump instead.

Is a strainer included?

Yes, with the pump, along with hose couplings, washers and clips. Fit the strainer every time: with 5 mm free passage, one stone ends the job.

Will it clear a flooded floor?

Not down to nothing. A standard strainer leaves a few inches behind on a flat surface. Honda make a residue pumping kit for the WX10 with a 140 mm floor tool and a 4 m suction hose that takes it down to about 3 mm.

Does it need two-stroke fuel?

No. The GX25 is a 4-stroke, so it runs on straight unleaded with oil in a separate sump. Nothing to mix.
