The accessory that turns a petrol transfer pump into a floor-clearing pump.

An engine pump on its standard strainer will always leave water behind on a flat surface. This kit replaces the strainer with a 140 mm wide floor tool on a 4 metre suction hose, and takes the same pump down to 3 mm. The tool can be lifted and carried from puddle to puddle with the engine still running, so you are not stopping and re-priming every time you move.

It fits the Honda WX10, Tsurumi TEM-25H and Tsurumi TE2-25H, which are the three 25mm petrol pumps in our range.

Why an engine pump leaves water behind

A submersible pump sits in the water. A petrol pump sits on dry ground and sucks the water up to itself through a strainer on the end of a hose.

That strainer is a basket, and it has to stay under water to keep the suction line full. Once the level drops to around the height of the basket the pump starts drawing air, loses prime, and stops moving water. On a flat floor that leaves you several inches of standing water and a pump that cannot reach it, which is the point at which most people give up and fetch a wet vac, a squeegee or a second pump.

The floor tool solves it by changing the shape of the intake. Instead of a basket sitting proud of the floor, you get a 140 mm wide flat mouth with the strainer built into it, sitting hard against the surface. It keeps a sealed water path at a depth a basket cannot work in, which is how the same pump gets down to 3 mm.

Nothing changes on the discharge side. The pump, the engine and the delivery hose all stay exactly as they were.

The pump is not included, and neither is discharge hose. This kit replaces the suction side of your existing setup, so keep the standard strainer to hand for ordinary open-water pumping.

Which pumps does it fit?

All three are 25 mm, 1 inch ported petrol pumps in the same weight class. If your pump is one of these, the kit fits.

Larger pumps in the range, the WB20 and WB30 and the 50 mm and above Tsurumi TE models, use bigger ports and are not covered by this kit. If you are choosing a pump and know you will want the floor tool, buy one of the three above. 

Moving from puddle to puddle without losing prime

This is the part that saves the time, and it is easy to miss on a spec sheet.

On a normal suction setup, the moment the strainer comes out of the water the line fills with air and the pump stops pumping. To carry on you have to stop the engine, re-fill the casing through the priming plug, and restart. Do that at every puddle across a warehouse floor and the job takes far longer than the pumping does.

With the floor tool you can lift it, walk it to the next puddle and set it down with the engine still running. Keep the moves brisk and the hose low so the water in the line does not all drain back, and the pump picks up again as soon as the tool is wetted.

How to get the best out of it

Bulk first, residue second. The floor tool is a finishing tool, not a bulk-water tool. A 140mm mouth skimming 3mm of water moves far less than the same pump drawing freely from a submerged strainer, because at that depth you are handling a thin film rather than a solid column of water. On a serious flood, run the pump on its standard strainer while there is depth to work with, then swap to the floor tool for the last few inches. That is the fastest way through the job and the easiest on the pump.

Keep the suction lift short. The kit will pull from up to 6 metres below the pump, but 4 metres or less is what we recommend. Every extra metre of lift makes priming slower and less certain, and takes the pump closer to the point where the water starts to break out of solution in the suction line rather than flowing. Setting the pump lower is always better than fitting a longer hose.

Keep the suction hose straight. Bends and kinks on the suction side cost you more than the same bends on the discharge, because the suction line is working against atmospheric pressure rather than with the pump behind it.

Prime before you start. These are self-priming pumps, which means they can clear air out of the suction line once the casing is wet. It does not mean they start dry. Fill the pump casing through the priming plug before the first start, every time. Running dry destroys the mechanical seal.

Work with the fall of the floor. Start at the low point and work outward. On a floor with no fall at all, a squeegee to walk water toward the tool will beat chasing individual puddles.

Would a submersible be better for this job?

If you have mains power at the job, a puddle sucker will clear a floor drier and with less setting up.

The Stream SPK530 clears to 1 mm and the Stream SPP2-4 to 2 mm, both lower than the 3 mm here, and there is no priming, no suction hose and no engine to look after. If the water needs clearing repeatedly and unattended, the SPK530A does it on an automatic floor sensor.

This kit is the answer when there is no power, or when the power is exactly what the flood has taken out, or when you already own one of the three pumps and would rather add a floor tool than a second pump. On a construction site, a field, a farm or a property with the consumer unit under water, that is most of the time.

Water quality limits

Clean and lightly silty water. The floor tool has an integral strainer, and it is what keeps grit and debris out of the pump, so never run without it. Skimming at 3 mm on a dirty floor draws in whatever is lying on that floor, so sweep the worst of the silt, leaves and rubble out of the way first and expect to rinse the strainer through during a long job. It is not a trash or sewage pump, and not for foul water or salt water. It does not treat or filter water, so nothing it moves is drinking water.

Petrol engine safety

Never run a petrol pump indoors or in any enclosed space.

Petrol engines produce carbon monoxide, which is colourless, odourless and lethal. That rules out cellars, basements, garages with the door shut, containers and covered walkways, even briefly and even with a window open. This kit makes indoor floors an obvious application, so be clear about the method: the pump goes outside and the suction hose goes in. The 4 m hose is what buys you that distance, and it is another reason to keep the pump close to the doorway rather than far from it.

Stop the engine and let it cool before refuelling, keep petrol away from the hot exhaust, and site the pump on firm level ground.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit my pump?

It fits the Honda WX10, the Tsurumi TEM-25H and the Tsurumi TE2-25H, all of which have 25 mm, 1 inch ports. It does not fit the WB20, the WB30 or the 50 mm and larger Tsurumi TE models. If you are not sure which pump you have, the model number is on the engine cover or the pump body, and we can check it for you.

How low does it actually pump?

Down to 3 mm on a flat surface. For comparison, a standard strainer on the same pump leaves several inches, and a mains-powered puddle sucker such as the SPK530 gets to 1 mm.

Can I really move it while the engine is running?

Yes, and that is the main reason to own it. Lift the tool, move to the next puddle and set it down without stopping the engine. Keep the moves brisk and the hose low so the suction line does not drain back completely, and the pump picks up again as soon as the tool is wetted.

How high can the pump sit above the water?

Up to 6 metres of suction lift, though 4 metres or less is what we recommend. Priming gets slower and less reliable the higher the pump sits. If you have a choice, move the pump down rather than adding hose.

Does it replace the standard strainer?

Yes. The strainer is built into the floor tool, and the kit comes with its own 4 m suction hose, so you swap the suction side over. Keep the original strainer, because for ordinary pumping out of a chamber, a ditch or a tank it is still the right fitting.

Will it pump as fast as the pump normally does?

No, and it is not meant to. Skimming a 3 mm film through a 140 mm mouth moves considerably less water than drawing freely from a submerged strainer. Use the pump normally while there is depth to work with, then fit the floor tool for the residue. That gets the floor dry faster than using the tool for the whole job.

Is a discharge hose included?

No. The kit covers the suction side only, so you use your existing delivery hose. For a long discharge run, bear in mind that bore matters more than length: our pump performance calculator will show you what a given run costs you.

Can I use it indoors?

The floor can be indoors. The pump cannot. Site the pump outside in fresh air and run the 4 m suction hose in through a door or window, because a petrol engine in an enclosed space produces lethal carbon monoxide. If the pump itself has to be in the room, you need an electric submersible instead.
