For a narrow space, that job is almost always unattended, so you are most likely looking at an automatic pump that turns itself on and off, and from there the choice comes down to how the pump senses the water and how small its footprint is.

Start with the switch, not the pump
In a narrow space, the thing most likely to cause trouble is not the pump body but how it switches on and off. A traditional hanging pendant float needs room to swing, and in a slim chamber it can snag on the wall or the pump and either fail to start or fail to stop, which is how pumps burn out. So the first real decision is the type of automatic switch, and that is a subject in its own right. The three questions that decide it
Once you know you want an automatic pump, three questions specific to a narrow space shape the answer, and then the usual pump conditions apply on top.
On top of these, the ordinary pump conditions still apply: the flow rate you need, the head the water must be lifted and pushed against, and the power supply available, whether that is a standard 230V plug or 110V on site. With those in mind, here are our picks for narrow spaces.
Best low budget for a narrow chamber: APP RS32EA
For a tight chamber on a budget, the APP RS32EA is our value pick.
It uses a miniature float switch rather than a swinging pendant, so it works in restricted spaces where a larger float would snag, and its slim body suits narrow sumps. It switches on at around 50mm and off at around 25mm, passes solids up to 4mm, and delivers 130 litres per minute to a maximum head of 7 metres from a small 0.20kW, 230V unit that plugs into an ordinary socket. At under 4kg and only 160 by 170mm across the base, it is the easy first choice where space and budget are both tight.

The popular middle option: AMA Drainer 301
Not quite as small or as low-pumping, but hugely popular for narrow chambers and sumps, is the AMA Drainer 301. Its compact arm float is the key: a simple, robust mechanical switch that many installers trust for its dependability, and which suits narrow sumps where a dangling pendant float might snag or fail to reset.
From the factory it switches on at 145mm and off at 70mm, adjustable higher, and in manual mode it will take water down to 15mm. It passes solids up to 10mm, more than the puddle-style pumps, moves 166 litres per minute to 6.5 metres of head, and weighs just 4.5kg. The one thing to allow for is that the arm float needs room to swing, so check the chamber is wide enough for the switch as well as the pump.

Premium low-level control: Tsurumi LSC 1.4S with sensor
At the premium end, the choice really comes down to how low you need to pump. If the answer is very low, the sensor-controlled Tsurumi LSC 1.4S Automatic is the pump. Instead of a float it uses probe-based level detection, which needs no swing room at all, making it ideal for narrow spaces and fixed installations. It pumps down to around 5mm as standard, or to roughly 1mm with the optional sensor extension probes, while still moving 170 litres per minute to 11 metres of head. Its measured footprint is around 221 by 196mm. Premium higher flow and dirtier water: Tsurumi POMA
If the priority is instead more flow or the ability to handle dirtier water in a narrow chamber, the Tsurumi POMA is the alternative premium pick. It uses a tube float switch, which is compact and well suited to narrow sumps, delivers up to 250 litres per minute, and is built to pass dirtier water than the low-level puddle pumps. Its footprint is around 197 by 225mm. Choose the POMA over the LSC where volume and solids matter more than pumping the last few millimetres dry.
