Best Plants for Flood-Prone Gardens: Planting, Drainage and Pumps

Some gardens flood again and again. Choosing flood-resistant plants and designing for water, with raised beds, bog gardens and the right drainage, keeps a wet garden looking good and cuts the losses.

If your garden floods, clearing the water is likely only part of the job. The other part is making the garden itself better able to cope, and designing it so water is stored, drained or moved in a way that reduces the risk of damage.

That comes down to two things: choosing plants that suit damp or seasonally wet ground, and understanding why the water is collecting in the first place.

Flooding and waterlogging are related, but they are not quite the same. Flooding is water covering the surface of the garden, often after intense rainfall, an overflowing drain or water arriving from elsewhere. Waterlogging is when the soil remains saturated and there is too little air around the roots. The right response depends on which problem you have, and many gardens have a combination of both.

Quick answer: In a flood-prone garden, choose plants that tolerate damp or seasonally wet soil, such as astilbe, hosta, Siberian iris, primula, meadowsweet and marsh marigold, and keep drought-loving plants such as lavender, rosemary and thyme in raised beds or containers. Raised planting, soil improvement, rain gardens and permeable surfaces can all help. Where water repeatedly collects in a defined low point and gravity drainage is not practical, a channel, sump and automatic pump may be appropriate, but only where there is a suitable and lawful place for the water to go.

Why plant choice matters in a wet garden

Plant roots need both water and oxygen. When soil remains saturated, water fills the spaces that would normally contain air, root function reduces and the risk of decay increases. A short-lived flood after a downpour may cause little lasting harm to established plants, but prolonged or repeated waterlogging is much more damaging.

There is a useful general pattern. Plants adapted to consistently moist ground are more likely to cope with occasional wet periods, while plants from dry or Mediterranean conditions usually struggle first. Even so, no plant list can guarantee success. Soil type, temperature, depth and duration of flooding, light levels and the time of year all affect how a plant responds.

The plants below are better described as suitable for damp, moisture-retentive or seasonally wet ground, rather than truly flood-proof. Few ordinary garden plants will tolerate long periods standing in water.

Trees for damp or occasionally wet ground

Trees need particular care because their eventual size, root spread and distance from buildings, drains and boundaries matter as much as their tolerance of wet soil. These examples cope better than many with damp or heavy ground, but they are not suitable for permanent standing water.

Shrubs for damp ground

These shrubs generally prefer moisture-retentive soil and cope better with damp conditions than drought-loving species. Most still need the soil to drain between wet periods.

Perennials for consistently moist or seasonally wet ground

This is where the choice is widest, and where a damp spot can become a feature rather than a problem. The exact species or cultivar matters, so check the label rather than relying on the common name alone.

A note on the vigorous classics

You will often see willow, alder, dogwood and elder recommended for wet ground, and there is good reason for that. They can perform very well in damp conditions, but they are not always the best fit for an average domestic garden.

Willow and alder can become large and fast growing. Their roots do not magically seek out sound drains, but they can exploit existing cracks, joints and leaks, so their mature size and distance from structures and services need proper thought. Dogwood and elder are easier to accommodate, but some forms spread, self-seed or need regular pruning to stay within bounds. In a larger garden they can be excellent. In a small garden, choose the exact species and location carefully.

Plants to avoid in a flood-prone garden

Plants adapted to dry conditions are usually the first to struggle in saturated soil. Mediterranean herbs such as thyme, rosemary and lavender, shrubs such as cistus and broom, and drought-tolerant perennials such as sea holly and globe thistle all prefer sharper drainage. Tulips and other bulbs from dry regions can also rot where the soil remains wet.

You may still be able to grow these plants in a flood-prone garden by keeping them in containers, raised beds or a higher part of the site where their roots remain above the saturated zone.

Take particular care with plants near ponds, ditches and watercourses. Some moisture-loving plants are invasive or subject to legal controls. In England and Wales, examples include Chilean rhubarb (Gunnera tinctoria) and Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera). Common names can be misleading, so check the exact botanical name against the current GOV.UK invasive non-native plant guidance before buying or planting.

Design the garden for water, not against it

Plant choice is only one part of the answer. A few design changes can make a flood-prone garden far more forgiving, but the first step is to understand whether the problem is poor soil drainage, a high water table, an overflowing drainage system or water arriving from outside the property.

Lifting roots above the saturated zone is one of the simplest ways to widen your planting options. Even a modest rise can help, although the height should reflect the expected water level and the rooting depth of the plant. Planting shrubs and trees on a broad, gentle mound can also keep more of the root system aerated.

A bog garden for ground that stays damp
A naturally damp low point can become a garden planted with moisture-lovers such as primulas, hostas and Rodgersia. A bog garden should be damp rather than permanently under water. Where standing water remains for long periods, pond-margin or aquatic planting may be more appropriate.

Improve the soil structure
Heavy clay and compacted soil can hold water near the surface. Relieving compaction and regularly incorporating or mulching with suitable organic matter can improve soil structure over time. Simply adding a small amount of sand, grit or gravel is unlikely to transform heavy clay because very large quantities would be needed. Avoid working or walking over clay soil when it is saturated, as this can make compaction worse.

Keep new surfaces permeable
Covering a garden with impermeable paving increases run-off and leaves less ground available to absorb rainfall. Gravel, porous asphalt and correctly designed permeable block paving can reduce this effect. The whole construction matters, including the sub-base and where the water is intended to go, so laying ordinary paving on sand does not automatically make it permeable.

Give water a safe place to collect
A rain garden, shallow basin or swale can collect and temporarily hold run-off away from doors and buildings. This works best where the ground can accept the water over time and the feature has been positioned so that exceedance does not simply move the problem elsewhere.

Where flooding is persistent or localised: a pumped surface water drain

Planting and passive drainage only go so far. Where water repeatedly collects in one defined location, for instance at a low threshold, sunken patio, light well or the low corner of a garden, a pumped surface water drain may be appropriate.

A channel or gully collects the water, a sump provides temporary storage and an automatic pump lifts it to a discharge point. The important part is the final destination. A drain, ditch, watercourse, sewer or soakaway cannot simply be assumed to be suitable, available or able to accept the flow. The arrangement may require testing, permission or consent, and the water must not be redirected in a way that increases flood risk to a neighbour, highway or another part of the property.

Gravity drainage should normally be considered first. Where pumping is necessary, the design should account for the required flow and pumping head, storage volume, pump controls, access for maintenance, electrical supply, alarms where appropriate, and what happens during a power cut, blockage or pump failure.

Where a portable pump still fits day to day

Alongside a permanent installation, a portable pump can still earn its place. For the shallow standing water left on lawns, patios and other hard surfaces, keeping a puddle pump available can turn a day of bailing into a much quicker pumping exercise. A pump moves water from one place to another. It does not make saturated ground or a failed soakaway accept water. Where a soakaway is already full, the water table is high or the receiving drain is surcharged, pumping more water towards it may achieve very little or make the situation worse. Before pumping, identify where the water will be discharged and make sure the route is suitable, lawful and does not create a new risk.

Planning for a resilient garden

A garden that copes with flooding is usually a mix of the right plants, sensible levels, space to hold water and a reliable way to drain or remove the water that cannot remain. If your garden floods regularly, check your long-term flood risk on GOV.UK, keep a record of when and where water appears, and look for patterns during different types of rainfall.
