Water Pump Hose Buying guide

We stock a full range of water pump hoses sized from ½" (12.5mm) up to 6" (152mm): soft yarn-reinforced layflat for ground level delivery, semi-rigid suction and delivery for buried runs and basement pumping, kink-resistant high pressure hose for irrigation and drinking water, clear braided hose where flow visibility matters, and lightweight budget discharge for aquatic and very light duty work. All available with next day UK delivery on orders placed before 2pm.

How to Choose the Right Water Pump Hose

Three questions answer almost every hose decision:

1. What size pump outlet? Match the hose internal diameter to your pump's outlet thread.

2. What route does the water take? Straight, level, ground-based runs suit layflat. Anything that climbs, turns, runs over uneven ground, or gets buried needs suction and delivery.

3. What pressure does the pump generate? Divide the pump's maximum head (in metres) by 10 to get pressure in bar. The hose working pressure must comfortably exceed this. The hose working pressure must comfortably exceed this. High pressure delivery hose handles up to 10 bar; standard layflat tops out at 4 bar.

Our Water Pump Hose Range

Each hose type is engineered for a specific job. Choosing correctly is straightforward once you know the route the water has to travel and the pressure your pump generates.

Layflat Hose

Soft, flat and flexible PVC hose with yarn reinforcement, the everyday workhorse of flood response, hire fleets, and site dewatering. Lies flat on the ground when idle, firms up under water pressure, and rolls back into a compact coil for storage. Available 1" to 6", working pressures 3 to 4 bar. Easy to store, cost effective, and quick to deploy. Best on straight runs across level ground.

Suction & Delivery Hose

Rigid but flexible PVC hose with embedded nylon spiral-helix reinforcement that resists kinking and collapse. Works on both the suction (inlet) and delivery (outlet) sides of pumps, and is the standard choice for pumping uphill, out of basements, around corners, or for buried installations. Available ¾" to 6", working pressures 3 to 7 bar. Buried suction and delivery hose can give a service life exceeding 20 years.

High Pressure Hose

Kink-resistant double-layered yellow PVC hose for irrigation, agricultural water transfer, and pressurised duties where standard delivery hose would be over-pressured. Food and drinking water safe, UV stable for outdoor use, abrasion resistant. Available ½" to 2", working pressures 5 to 10 bar. The default choice for any potable water application.

Braided Hose

Clear PVC hose with polyester braid reinforcement, suitable for both suction and delivery. The transparent walls allow full visual inspection of flow, making it the natural choice for laboratory, food and beverage, water feature, aquaculture, and hydroponic installations. Available ½" to 1¼", working pressures 7 to 12 bar.

Budget Discharge Hose

Spiral-helix reinforced thin PVC hose for very light duty, economy and aquatic use. Available 1" to 1½" in 30 metre coils only.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

What hose do I need for a water pump?

Match the hose to your pump's outlet size and to the route the water has to travel. Layflat for ground level runs, suction and delivery for buried or vertical runs, high pressure delivery for irrigation and drinking water, braided for flow visibility.

What is the difference between suction hose and discharge hose?

A suction hose runs from the water source into a surface mounted pump and must resist collapse under vacuum. A discharge hose runs from the pump outlet to the discharge point and only handles positive pressure. Suction and delivery hose does both jobs in one product.

Can I use a garden hose with a water pump?

For low volume duties on a small pump, such as the FL Demand Pump, this is fine. For anything larger, no. Garden hoses are not pressure rated for pump outputs and the small bore restricts flow significantly. Use a properly sized water pump hose.

What is layflat hose?

Layflat is a soft, yarn-reinforced PVC hose that lies flat when idle and inflates under water pressure. It is the most common discharge hose for flood response, site dewatering, and general water transfer.

Can water pump hose be buried?

This depends on the environment, but generally, yes, suction and delivery hose with nylon spiral-helix reinforcement is built for permanent underground installation and commonly exceeds 10-20 years of service life. Layflat, high pressure, braided and budget discharge hoses are not suitable for burial.
