Cost‑Effective Puddle Pumps for Clean & Slightly Dirty Water

APP Pumps offer the BPS series of puddle pumps, a range of cost‑effective and reliable water pumps designed for clean and slightly dirty water applications.

If space is limited or you need a pump suitable for partial immersion, the BPS series is an ideal choice. (Please note: the pump can be fully submerged, but is also designed to operate in partial immersion.)

Why choose the BPS Manual pumps

Choose a BPS manual pump when you want a simple, reliable transfer pump you can move between jobs without relying on a float switch. The BPS-80 and BPS-100 manual models include residue strainers to help pump down to around 3 mm, making them a strong choice for low-level clear-up in basements, cellars and shallow pooling.

Materials and Construction

  • BPS‑80 and BPS‑100 feature specialist 304 stainless steel shafts.
  • BPS‑400 models are fitted with a robust 410 stainless steel shaft.

The robust construction of the BPS series delivers excellent resistance to wear, making APP Pumps BPS models ideal as puddle pumps.

For automatic pumping in narrow sumps, the BPS‑100EA is recommended, as its compact float switch reduces the risk of obstruction. Pendant floats can become trapped in restricted chambers (as shown above).

Applications

Suitable for:

  • Cellars and basements
  • Light drainage and general water transfer
  • Sumps and tanks
  • Final effluent transfer (clean water applications)
  • Sprinkling and washdown tasks
  • Trade and industrial clean-up jobs

Not recommended for use in ponds or water features.

Construction and Build Quality

The BPS range is built in thermoplastic with a top discharge layout for restricted access areas. Shaft materials vary by model: BPS-80 and BPS-100 use 304 stainless steel shafts, while BPS-400 uses a 410 stainless steel shaft for robust performance. Each pump uses a carbon/ceramic mechanical seal in an intermediate oil chamber with an inner lip seal to improve wear resistance. Do not allow the pump to run dry.

Key Features

  • Manual operation for straightforward pumping and easy portability
  • Top discharge, water-cooled design for tight spaces and partial immersion
  • Low-level pumping: BPS-80 and BPS-100 manual models can pump down to about 3 mm
  • Built-in overload protection that shuts down on overheating and restarts once cooled
  • Anti-airlock device improves reliability in use (not on BPS80 model)
  • Designed for clean and slightly dirty water

Warranty

All APP water pumps are supplied with a 2‑year manufacturer’s warranty.

What is the Difference between a Manual & Automatic Water Pump?

Manual Pump - A pump that does not have a float control or pressure switch to start and stop. It will require an operator to control it.

Automatic Pump - A pump that has a float control or pressure switch to start and stop without an operator.

A float switch is a level controller that has a buoyant, water-tight device that lies
on a liquid, actuating a micro-switch when the level rises or falls, turning a pump on or off.

Which Hose Should I use with my Water Pump?

Layflat hose is very affordable but can kink. Depending on your use, you may be better using a reinforced suction delivery hose for your needs.

Suction delivery hose is ideal for pumping up stairs or over obstacles.

Jonathan Martin explains the differences to help you choose which hose is best for your scenario.

What are the Different Types of Float Switches?

Each type of float switch has its advantages and is best suited for specific scenarios. The choice of float switch depends on factors such as the type of liquid, space constraints, required accuracy, and the pump's intended application.

Common questions

Can the APP BPS manual pump handle dirty water or floodwater?

Yes, for clean and slightly dirty water such as cellar and basement clear-up, shallow pooling and sump or tank transfer, up to 40°C. Solids handling is small: about 2mm on the BPS-80, 3mm on the BPS-100 and 5mm on the BPS-400. It is not for sewage, salt water, or corrosive, explosive or flammable liquids, and it is not recommended for ponds or water features.

How low will the BPS manual pump drain water?

The BPS-80 and BPS-100 manual models are fitted with residue strainers that let them pump water down to about 3mm, which suits shallow pooling on cellar and basement floors. The 3mm figure applies to those two models, not the larger BPS-400. As manual pumps they run whenever powered, so switch off at the mains once the water is cleared.

How much water does the BPS manual pump move?

The BPS-80 moves up to 40 litres a minute with a maximum head of 4m, the BPS-100 up to 70 litres a minute and 6.5m, and the BPS-400 up to 220 litres a minute and 9m. These are maximum figures: real flow falls as the vertical lift increases and with longer or narrower hose, and it stops altogether at the maximum head.

Should I choose the manual or automatic BPS pump?

Choose the manual BPS when you will be on hand to switch it on and off and want it to pump as low as possible, for example clearing a flooded cellar floor. For unattended pumping in a sump, the BPS automatic uses a pendant float switch for wider chambers, and the BPS-100EA has a compact float for narrow sumps and very shallow water.

Can the BPS pump run dry or work part-submerged?

It can work partially or fully submerged, thanks to its top discharge, water-cooled design, down to a maximum immersion depth of about 6m. Do not let it run dry, as this can overheat the motor, although the oil-chamber seal gives some protection and an overload switch stops it if it overheats. Stand it on a firm raised base so debris is not drawn in, and protect it from frost.
