FOR CONTRACTORS

Water Pumps for Construction & Civil Engineering

The right pump for a construction site is the one matched to the water, the lift and the power on site, not the one with the biggest flow figure. For most groundworks that means a submersible dewatering pump that tolerates grit and runs ...

Buying guide

Pumps for construction by job.

Keeping an excavation or trench dry

General dewatering of digs, trenches, foundations and manholes. Submersible contractor pumps that run continuously and handle grit and small stones.

Featured: Tsurumi LB480, LB800 and LB1500; EVAK Drainox 400/750 and Drainox 1500; Tsurumi HS2.4S; Tsurumi OM5 and HSD2.55S. See site drainage and dewatering pumps.

Silty and muddy water

Where fines settle and block a standard intake, you need an agitator or a pump built for abrasive water.

Featured: EVAK Trenchman 400 (built-in agitator, 15 mm passage); BBC Semisom 262 and 635; Arven Regal 304 stainless; Arven Mizar VOX. A matched Silty Trench Dewatering Kit is on the way.

Clearing to a low level

Site puddle and flood clearance to a few millimetres off a slab or in a shored pit.

Featured: Stream SPK530; Stream SPK450A (110V); EGO 500 GI and GI LS; Tsurumi LSC2.75S; EVAK Residox 750. See puddle pumps.

Moving high volumes fast

When a lot of water arrives at once.

Featured: APP HD-15 (830 L/min); Tsurumi HS3.75S; EVAK Drainox 1500; Tsurumi NK and KHL-20 high head. See high-flow and high-head pumps.

Where there is no mains power

Petrol and diesel pumps that sit on the bank and draw through a suction hose.

Featured: Honda WB20, WB30 and WX10; Tsurumi TE, TEF/TEW, TDS and TD petrol; DryMax diesel. See engine-driven pumps.

110V site supply

Transformer-fed pumps for 110V sites, same kit otherwise.

Featured: Stream SPK450A; Tsurumi LB480 and 50PNI2 in 110V. See 110V pumps.

Site kits

Matched site kits, with the pump, hose, strainer and fittings sorted for the job, are being built for construction: a Contractor Dewatering Kit (Tsurumi LB480), a Silty Trench Kit (EVAK Trenchman) and a High-Flow Dewatering Kit (APP HD-15). In the meantime, see the pump kits range.

Why contractors buy from us

We are engineer-led and hold UK stock for next-day. We supply hire-grade brands such as Tsurumi, carry 110V and 230V across the contractor range, and keep spares. If the lift, distance or ground conditions make the job harder than a catalogue pick, our team will size it with you, and our engineering review service covers the projects that need calculations.

Many of these are FPS Engineered™ combinations, specified and matched by our team. Learn more about FPS Engineered™.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

What pump do I need to dewater a trench?

A submersible contractor pump sized to the inflow, not the headline maximum, and one that tolerates grit. If the water is silty, choose a pump with an agitator such as the EVAK Trenchman. See site drainage and dewatering pumps.

How do I pump silty or muddy water without blocking?

Use an agitator pump that keeps fines in suspension, such as the EVAK Trenchman, or an abrasion-resistant pump built for gritty water. A standard clean-water intake will clog as silt settles.

110V or 230V on site?

110V for transformer-fed sites, 230V where there is building mains. Many contractor pumps are offered in either voltage with identical performance. See 110V pumps.

Petrol or electric for a site with no power?

An engine-driven pump that sits on the bank and draws through a suction hose, sized by its outlet. See engine-driven pumps.

How much flow do I need to keep a dig dry?

Match the pump to the rate the water arrives, not the biggest flow figure on the box. Vertical lift and hose length reduce the delivered flow, so allow headroom or check the duty.

Should I buy or hire?

Buy where a pump earns its keep across enough jobs; hire for one-off peaks. We supply spares so a bought pump keeps working.
