Garage flooding

Garage flooding: choosing the right pump

Garage flooding ranges from rain creeping under the door to standing water after a downpour. The best answer is usually a combination: a pump to remove the water, and a barrier to stop it getting in. Here are your options.

Pump it out, keep it out.

The most resilient garage setup pairs a pump to clear water with a barrier to stop it entering. Here is how each part works.

Quick response: clear the water fast

For getting water out quickly when it happens, a manual puddle pump is the tool. It pumps shallow water down to a few millimetres. Good choices are the Stream SPP2-4, the Stream SPK530, or the Tsurumi LSC1.4S.

Unattended protection: automatic pumping

If your garage floods when you are not there, an automatic puddle pump switches itself on as water rises. It can even sit behind a flood barrier to deal with any seepage that gets through.

Permanent pumped drainage

For a long-term fix where surface water collects, a packaged pump station collects and pumps water away automatically. See our surface water pumps for more on pumped surface water drainage, or see our pumped surface water drainage case study.

Keep the water out in the first place

Pumping is only half the job. To stop water entering, our sister company Flood Protection Solutions supplies threshold seals and flood barriers sized for your garage: a GaraDry threshold seal for water creeping under the door, or an aluminium flood barrier for deeper flooding. Combining a barrier with an automatic pump behind it is the most resilient setup.

Common questions

Garage flooding, answered.

What pump is best for a flooded garage?

For clearing water quickly, a manual puddle pump such as the Stream SPP2-4, Stream SPK530 or Tsurumi LSC1.4S removes shallow water down to a few millimetres. If the garage floods when you are not there, an automatic puddle pump switches itself on as water rises.

How do I stop water getting into my garage?

Pumping is only half the job. A threshold seal stops water creeping under the door, and a flood barrier holds back deeper water. Our sister company Flood Protection Solutions supplies both, sized for your opening. A barrier with an automatic pump behind it is the most resilient setup.

Can a garage pump run automatically?

Yes. An automatic puddle pump or sump pump runs unattended, switching on as water rises, so your garage is protected even when you are away.
