Part D Cam Coupling with Female BSP, the fitting that puts a cam socket on your pump
The Part D screws onto a threaded pump outlet and gives you a cam socket in its place. From that point on your hose connects by hand in a couple of seconds, with two flip-down arms doing the work that a spanner and a threaded joint used to. It is the pump-side counterpart to a Part E on the hose. Available in 25mm, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm.
What does the Part D do?
It is a two ended fitting with no hose tail. One end is a female BSP thread that screws over the male threaded outlet on your pump. The other end is a female cam coupler, the socket half, carrying the two hinged arms and the sealing gasket.
Fit one to your pump and it can stay there. Every hose you own that is terminated in a Part E will then connect to that pump without tools, and disconnect just as fast when you move it.
Part D or Part A? Choosing which way round
Both of these screw onto a male threaded pump outlet. The difference is which half of the cam pair ends up on the pump, and therefore which half you need on your hoses.

Neither is better. What matters is picking one convention and applying it to every pump and every hose you own, so that anything fits anything. Mixing the two is what leaves you on site holding two halves that will not go together.
A common reason to prefer the Part D is that the arms and the gasket, the only moving and wearing parts of a cam joint, stay on the pump where they are looked after, rather than on hose ends that get dragged through mud.
Which size do I need?
Sizing a Part D works differently from sizing a hose tail fitting, and this is worth reading carefully.
The size shown refers to the BSP thread and the cam size, not to a hose bore, because there is no hose tail on this fitting. A 50mm Part D has a 2 inch female BSP thread and a 2 inch cam socket.
- Match the size to your pump outlet thread. A pump with a 2 inch male BSP outlet takes the 50mm Part D.
- The cam end then dictates your hose fitting. A 50mm Part D accepts a 50mm Part E and nothing else, since cam halves only mate with the same nominal size.
- There is no reducing option. If your hose is a different size from your pump outlet, that change has to be made with a separate reducing bush on the thread, before the Part D.

What is it used for?
- Converting a threaded pump outlet to a quick release connection, permanently

Fitting
- Seal the thread. Wrap PTFE tape or apply a suitable thread sealant to the male thread on the pump before screwing the Part D on.
- Put the spanner on the hex or the flats of the body. Never lever against the cam arms, which is the quickest way to bend them and ruin the fitting.
- Nip it up, do not force it. Overtightening a threaded fitting can split a housing, and the sealant rather than the torque is what makes the joint tight.
- Point the arms where you can reach them. You will be operating them by hand, sometimes in a chamber or a trench, so it is worth thinking about orientation before you tighten.
- Keep the gasket clean. The seal that matters for the cam joint sits in the face of this fitting, so wipe it before each connection and replace it once it hardens or flattens.
What it is not for
The cam end of this fitting is built to be undone, which sets its limits. Do not use it on pipework that will be buried, boxed in or otherwise put beyond inspection, on pressurised mains plumbing, or on a joint nobody will look at again for months. It will not change hose or pipe size. It also will not fit a pump with a female threaded outlet, since the thread on this fitting is female too, and two female threads cannot join.
