WHY IT WORKS

Built for the job

4" Borehole Pump for Higher Pressure and Deeper Installations

Step Up from Entry-Level Borehole Pumps

The Acuasub is a 4 inch submersible borehole pump designed for high pressure systems and deep installations.

It sits above simpler pumps such as the Eurojet, and is typically used where more head, more control and a more robust setup is required.

Where this pump is typically used

The Acuasub is suited to:

  • 4" boreholes
  • Deeper wells where higher pressure is needed
  • Domestic and agricultural water systems
  • Irrigation, spraying and processing applications

It is the right choice when a basic borehole pump is not sufficient, and is typically selected where higher pressure or greater flexibility across different system requirements is needed. Compared with larger 5" borehole pumps such as the Acuabig, the Acuasub is designed for narrower boreholes where higher pressure is still required.

Why choose the Acuasub

  • High pressure capability for deep installations
  • Designed for demanding systems
  • Supplied with external starter and protection
  • 230V supply

How it operates

All pumps in the Acuasub range are manual. They run when powered and can be controlled using a pressure switch or controller in the delivery line, depending on the system setup. This makes them suited to fixed installations, rather than temporary or drop-in use.

Installation

Installed within a 4" borehole and connected to a control system. Flow is typically managed using a pressure switch in the delivery line.

A Note on Potable Water and WRAS

These pumps are described by Umbra Pompe as suitable for potable water because of the materials from which they are manufactured. They do not carry WRAS approval.

WRAS approval is primarily relevant to fittings and products connected to the public mains water network. A private borehole is a separate supply, so WRAS approval is not usually required for the pump itself.

Anyone using a borehole for drinking water should also ensure that the full system is suitable and that the water is tested where appropriate.

Build and design

The Acuasub is a multi-stage pump designed to deliver high pressure from deeper boreholes.

  • Stainless steel body and strainer
  • Multi-stage impellers for pressure
  • Oil-cooled motor for durability
  • Non toxic oil
  • Supplied with an external inline starter and thermal protection box

The pump is designed for clean water but can handle water containing up to 60 g/m³ of suspended solids. An optional 80 micron stainless steel sand filter is available to help prevent damage from abrasive particles.

The Acuasub has a 1¼" outlet (32mm). It can be connected using a 32mm male BSP hose tail (see hose tails and connectors), allowing use with:

  • High pressure delivery hose

Performance overview

Performance depends on the model selected. Flow rates range from 45 litres/min to 90 litres/min, with head height ranging from 70m to 140m.

  • High head, pressure-focused pump
  • Maximum submersion depth: 17 metres
  • Operating temperature: 0°C to 35°C

Important notes

  • Designed for clean water, including rainwater and stored water
  • Can handle small suspended solids (up to 60 g/m³)
  • Not suitable for sewage or heavy abrasive material
  • Requires external control equipment

Sinking a new borehole? Note that drilling beyond 15 metres must be notified to the British Geological Survey, and you may need an abstraction licence.

Common questions

Can the Acuasub pump sandy or dirty borehole water?

Only clean water. The Acuasub handles very fine suspended solids (no more than 50 g/m³ per Umbra Pompe) and is not for sewage or abrasive material. If your borehole produces sand, choose the version with the optional 80 micron stainless steel sand filter, which helps prevent damage from abrasive particles, and clear sediment before installing. Water must be between 0°C and 35°C.

How much flow and head does each Acuasub model give?

The Acuasub 55/100 and 55/140 deliver up to 45 litres per minute with maximum heads of 100 and 140 metres. The 100/70 and 100/100 deliver up to 90 litres per minute with maximum heads of 70 and 100 metres. As a guide, 10 metres of head is about 1 bar. Flow drops as the lift and the pressure you need approach those maximums.

Does the Acuasub need a pressure switch, pressure vessel or dry-run protection?

All Acuasub models are manual and come with an external inline starter and thermal protection box, but no float. For on-demand supply, fit a pressure switch or controller in the delivery line. Umbra Pompe says the pump must never run dry and that pumps without a float need a probe-type minimum-level control. Umbra Pompe does not specify a pressure vessel, so size one as part of your system design.

Should I order the Acuasub with the sand filter?

Order it if there is any chance of sand or grit in your borehole. The optional filter is 80 micron stainless steel mesh and is designed to protect the pump from abrasive solids, which the multi-stage impellers do not tolerate. Umbra Pompe also recommends keeping the pump at least 100 mm off the bottom and clearing sand and sediment from the borehole before installation.
