If you need to remove flood water, it is tempting to start by choosing a pump.
The problem is that the pump is only one part of the system.
Water has to reach the pump, pass through it, travel along a hose and then be moved away from the area you are trying to protect. The hose diameter, hose length, fittings, vertical lift and type of water can all change how the complete setup performs.
The short answer: If you already have suitable hose and fittings, buying the pump on its own can make perfect sense. If you are starting from scratch, particularly for an urgent flooding problem, a properly matched pump kit can remove much of the compatibility guesswork.
That is the thinking behind our FPS Engineered™ Pump Kits. Rather than simply placing a pump and an arbitrary hose in the same package, each kit starts with the job that needs doing and works backwards to the pump, hose, fittings and controls required.
What is the difference between a flood pump and a flood pump kit?
A flood pump is the pump itself. Depending on the model, it may arrive with a hose tail or adaptor, but the discharge hose and other components are commonly selected separately.
A complete flood pump kit combines the pump with some or all of the items needed to use it, normally including:
- a correctly sized discharge hose;
- the hose tail, adaptor or connection required by the pump;
- hose clips or couplings;
- a non-return valve where it is useful to the application; and
- automatic controls or other accessories where the job requires them.
The important word is matched. A kit is only useful if the components work together.
Why hose selection can change pump performance
Pump specifications normally include maximum flow and maximum head. Both numbers are useful, but neither tells you exactly how much water will arrive at the end of your hose on site.
Maximum flow is generally achieved at very low head. Once the pump has to lift water, push it along a hose and overcome fittings and valves, the delivered flow reduces. Narrower and longer hoses create greater friction loss.
This is why we are increasingly publishing estimated performance through the hose supplied with our kits, where sufficient pump-curve data is available. It gives a more useful indication of how the complete setup is expected to perform than the unrestricted headline figure alone.

That is the number that is usually more useful to somebody asking whether the pump will keep on top of water entering a basement or plant room.
When does buying the pump on its own make sense?
There is nothing inherently better about a kit if you already have the rest of the system.
Buying a pump on its own is often the right option where:
- you are replacing an existing pump with compatible hose and fittings already installed;
- you already own suitable hose, couplings and valves;
- the pump is being incorporated into professionally designed pipework or drainage;
- you need a specialist pump for an existing chamber or sump; or
- you know the required outlet size, hose bore, controls and operating head.

When does a complete pump kit make more sense?
For many homeowners, facilities teams and occasional users, the real question is not simply "which pump should I buy?" It is "what do I need to get this water from here to there?"
A complete kit is particularly useful when the equipment is being bought for a defined task and the customer does not already have the supporting components.
Small attended flooding
For a small garage, cellar or utility-room flood where somebody will be present, our Small Flood Pump Kit using the Stream SPP2 puddle pump is deliberately simple. It combines the manual SPP2 with 6 m or 10 m of 25 mm reinforced suction and delivery hose and the fittings needed to connect it.

The SPP2 has a maximum flow of 70 litres per minute, a 6 m maximum head and pumps standing water down to approximately 2 mm. It has a 3 mm free passage for grit and light debris. It is manual, so the operator needs to stay with it and switch it off once the water has been cleared.
Recurring shallow flooding where nobody may be there
Where water might arrive overnight or while the property is unoccupied, automatic operation can matter more than the last few millimetres of residual water.
The FPS Engineered™ Automatic Puddle Pump Kit uses the Stream SPP2-4A with a separate floor sensor. It starts at approximately 20 mm of water and stops at around 10 mm. The kit includes 10 m of reinforced 25 mm hose and a 25 mm non-return valve.

At a representative 2 m lift through the supplied hose, the typical flow is around 45 litres per minute, or approximately 2,700 litres per hour.
Heavier-duty automatic pumping
For commercial basements, plant rooms, lift pits, service areas or more demanding repeated use, the Stream SPK530A gives a substantial increase in head, capacity and construction.
Our SPK530A automatic kit uses the same low-level floor-sensor principle, starting at around 20 mm and stopping at around 10 mm, but adds 11 m of maximum head, a 0.53 kW motor, cast aluminium and cast iron construction and a polyurethane vortex impeller.

Manual or automatic is often more important than "which brand?"
Think about when the water arrives.
If flooding is occasional and somebody will be there to deploy the pump, manual can be lower cost, straightforward and capable of clearing to a very low residual depth.
If the risk is that water arrives unnoticed, an automatic pump can start managing it before somebody has to react. This is particularly relevant to cellars, basements, plant rooms and garages affected by recurring shallow water.
Automatic does not necessarily mean permanently installed. An automatic low-level pump can also be deployed temporarily before forecast rainfall, provided it is positioned safely and the electrical and discharge arrangements are appropriate.
How dirty is the water?
Flood water is not all the same. Relatively clean rainwater on a garage floor is different from silty excavation water or water containing leaves, grit and debris.
The specification to look for is free passage, which indicates the size of solids a pump is designed to pass. Puddle pumps prioritise very low-level suction, so their solids passage is relatively restricted. Dirty-water and site pumps normally provide greater passage and more abrasion-resistant hydraulic components.
This is one reason there is no single "best flood pump" for every job. The correct choice depends on both the water depth and what is suspended in it.
Do I need a non-return valve?
A non-return valve reduces water travelling back down the discharge line after the pump stops. That can be useful where water has been lifted vertically or pushed through a longer hose run.
With a low-level automatic pump, repeated run-back can refill the immediate area around the sensor and cause unnecessary cycling. Some pumps have a check valve incorporated into their design; some kits include one separately. It should be considered as part of the complete arrangement rather than treated as a universal add-on.

Do I need to know where the water will go?
You do need a practical discharge route, but for most straightforward uses this does not need to become complicated. Make sure the hose is long enough to move the water away from the area you are trying to protect and that it will not simply run back towards the pump.
For unusual, contaminated or site-specific drainage situations, separate advice may be required. For a typical temporary flood-pump setup, the important point at purchase stage is simply to make sure you have enough appropriately sized hose for the job.
So, pump only or pump kit?
If you already have a compatible system, buy the pump you need.
If you are starting with nothing, a well-configured kit is often the easier route because the pump, hose and main fittings have already been selected to work together.
