Automatic puddle pump for basements, cellars and domestic flood water

Starts automatically at approximately 20mm of water and switches off again at around 10mm. The Stream SPP2-4A is a compact automatic puddle pump developed primarily for domestic applications such as cellars, basements, garages, light wells and sump pits where shallow water can appear without warning.

The SPP2-4A automatic version was developed by the FPS Engineered™ team after identifying a practical limitation with conventional float-switch pumps: they often need a much greater depth of water, and more physical space, before they can switch on and off reliably.

Instead of mounting a conventional float switch on the side of the pump, the SPP2-4A uses a separate low-level crab-style floor sensor. The sensor can be positioned independently at the point where water collects, allowing the pump to start at approximately 20mm and stop again at around 10mm.

The result is a small automatic water pump designed for situations where waiting for several centimetres of standing water before pumping simply is not good enough.

How does the automatic floor sensor work?

The SPP2-4A uses a compact crab-style floor sensor on its own lead. Unlike a conventional float switch attached to the side of a pump, the sensor can sit flat at the point where water reaches first.

When the water depth reaches approximately 20mm, the sensor switches the pump on.

As the pump removes the water and the level falls to around 10mm, the sensor switches it off again.

This low operating range makes the SPP2-4A particularly useful where a conventional float switch would require considerably deeper standing water before it could operate.

The sensor can also be positioned vertically to hold the pump running when you want to remove the remaining water during an attended clear-up. Stay with the pump when using it this way, because the automatic stop function is overridden while the sensor is held in that position.

The SPP2-4A is aimed primarily at domestic and lighter-duty automatic drainage applications. It is particularly useful where relatively small volumes of water arrive intermittently and the priority is getting the pump to respond automatically at a low water level.

What flow will I actually get?

The maximum flow and maximum head quoted for a water pump occur at opposite ends of its performance curve. You therefore do not get 70 litres per minute while also lifting water 6 metres.

For a more useful comparison, the figures below estimate the performance of the SPP2-4A at different vertical lifts through either 10m of 25mm hose or a narrower 19mm hose.

Use the 25mm outlet wherever practical. A wider discharge hose creates less friction than a narrower hose, allowing more of the pump's available flow to reach the discharge point.

At a typical 2m vertical lift through 10m of 25mm hose, the SPP2-4A is estimated to deliver around 45 litres per minute, or 2,700 litres per hour.

Manual, automatic or heavy duty: which puddle pump should I choose?

The SPP2-4 and SPP2-4A use the same compact pumping unit, but they are intended for different jobs. The SPK530A is the step up where the application becomes more demanding.

Choose the manual SPP2-4 if you will be there while pumping and want to remove water as close to floor level as possible.

Choose the SPP2-4A for most domestic automatic applications where the priority is having the pump respond automatically as water arrives.

Choose the SPK530A Automatic for commercial or heavier-duty applications, significantly higher flows, greater pumping heights or where a more substantial pump is appropriate.

Why did FPS Engineered develop an automatic SPP2-4?

The manual Stream SPP2-4 is a very effective and very popular low-level puddle pump, particularly where somebody is present and wants to remove water as close to floor level as possible.

The problem with conventional automatic pumps is the switch. A traditional side-mounted float needs enough water depth and physical space to rise before the pump starts, and then needs the level to fall far enough before it switches off again.

That can be perfectly acceptable in a large sump, but it is much less useful on the floor of a domestic cellar, basement or garage where several centimetres of standing water may already represent a problem.

The FPS Engineered™ team therefore developed the SPP2-4A automatic configuration around a separate low-level floor sensor. It retains the compact SPP2-4 pumping unit but allows the switching point to be positioned independently from the pump itself.

The result is a simple distinction: the SPP2-4 is for attended low-level pumping; the SPP2-4A is for automatic low-level pumping.

Do I need a non-return valve?

If you are pumping a short distance horizontally to a nearby drain, a non-return valve may not be necessary. If you are lifting water upwards from a cellar, basement or sump, we strongly recommend one.

When the pump switches off, water remains inside the discharge hose. Without a non-return valve, that water can run back towards the pump and raise the water level around the sensor again. This can cause unnecessary stop-start cycling.

Water quality

For clean and slightly dirty water with solids up to 3mm. The SPP2-4A can handle small amounts of fine suspended material but is not a sewage pump. Do not use it for sewage, heavily contaminated or abrasive water, corrosive liquids, oils, fats, flammable liquids or other unsuitable fluids.

Setting up the SPP2-4A

Choose the largest suitable hose tail. Three sizes are supplied, but using 25mm hose wherever practical reduces friction and allows more of the pump's available flow to reach the discharge point.

Position the sensor at the low point. Place it flat on the surface where water is expected to collect first, with clear space around it.

Route the discharge properly. Keep the hose as short and straight as practical and discharge somewhere the water can drain away without simply flowing back towards the area you are pumping.

Test the automatic operation. Before relying on the pump, test it with clean water and confirm that the sensor switches the pump on and off correctly.

If you are pumping vertically from a basement or cellar, consider fitting a non-return valve to prevent the water held in the discharge hose running back towards the pump when it stops.

Is the Stream SPP2-4A fully automatic?

Yes. The separate floor sensor starts the pump when water reaches approximately 20mm and switches it off again at around 10mm. It does not require a separate control panel.

Is the SPP2-4A a good pump for a domestic basement or cellar?

Yes. That is one of its main intended applications. Its compact size and low-level automatic sensor make it particularly useful for domestic basements, cellars, garages and sump pits where relatively clean water enters intermittently and needs to be controlled automatically.

How low will the SPP2-4A pump water?

In automatic operation it switches off at approximately 10mm. If your priority is removing water as close to the floor as possible while you are present, the manual Stream SPP2-4 pumps down to approximately 2mm and may be the better choice.

Does the SPP2-4A come with a hose?

No. The pump is supplied with 12mm, 19mm and 25mm hose tails, but discharge hose is purchased separately. For a domestic cellar or basement, the easiest option is our complete FPS Engineered™ automatic basement pump kit, which includes the pump, reinforced hose, non-return valve and fittings.

Can I use ordinary garden hose?

The supplied 12mm hose tail allows connection to garden hose, but a narrower hose creates significantly more friction and reduces flow. Where practical, use 25mm discharge hose to preserve more of the pump's available flow, particularly on longer or uphill runs.

Is the SPP2-4A suitable for commercial use?

The SPP2-4A is aimed primarily at domestic and lighter-duty automatic drainage. For commercial, construction or more demanding applications, we recommend considering the Stream SPK530A Automatic Heavy Duty Puddle Sucker Pump, which offers significantly greater flow and head.

Is the SPP2-4A suitable for continuous operation?

It is intended primarily for occasional, intermittent and emergency drainage duties rather than continuous 24-hour pumping. For a regularly operating permanent installation, choose a pump designed for the required duty and operating cycle.

What is the difference between a float switch and the SPP2-4A floor sensor?

A conventional float switch needs enough water depth and physical space for the float to rise and fall. The SPP2-4A uses a separate low-level floor sensor instead, allowing the switching point to be located independently from the pump and enabling automatic operation at much shallower water depths.
