But water pumps are not all designed to do the same job.

Maximum flow rate does not tell the whole story
Another common way of comparing pumps is by their maximum flow rate.
A pump capable of 15,000 litres per hour can appear better than one capable of 10,000 litres per hour.
But maximum flow is normally only part of the story.
As a pump has to lift water higher, its available flow generally reduces.
Hose length, hose diameter, fittings and bends can also create resistance.
A pump moving water a few metres across a garden is therefore doing a very different job to a pump moving water from a basement, up several metres and then through a long discharge hose.

Sometimes removing the last few millimetres matters

For flood clean-up, the lowest level a pump can reach can be just as important as its maximum flow.
A conventional drainage pump may leave several centimetres of water behind.
That may not matter when emptying a pond or excavation.
It can matter considerably when clearing water from a kitchen, garage, cellar or warehouse floor.
A puddle pump is specifically designed to operate at very low water levels, with some suitable models capable of reducing water to only a few millimetres.
This is why the question should not simply be:
“Can this pump move dirty water?”
It should be:
“Can this pump do the job I actually need it to do?”
The pump is only part of the pumping system
Even selecting the correct pump does not necessarily give you everything you need.
Depending on the application, you may also require:
- discharge hose
- the correct hose tail
- hose clips
- couplings
- adapters

Those parts can also affect performance.
A hose that is too narrow can restrict flow.
