Why 110V on UK Construction Sites

Why 110V on UK Construction Sites

110V water pumps are the standard specification for portable equipment used in wet and high-risk environments on UK construction sites. A 110V centre-tapped to earth supply limits the voltage to 55V to earth, which significantly reduces the severity of electric shock if a cable is damaged or a connection becomes contaminated with water.

This is a safety standard for temporary works rather than a performance requirement. It aligns with normal site transformer distribution and Electricity at Work / CDM expectations across the UK construction industry.

Choosing the Correct 110V Variant

Choosing the Correct 110V Variant

This collection groups together pumps that are available with a 110V option. Many of these models are also manufactured in other voltages, including 230V single phase and 400V three phase. You must select the 110V variant on the product page before adding to basket.

If you are unsure which variant suits your site supply, our team can help confirm the correct specification before you order. Call our UK helpdesk on 0115 987 0358 or use our Water Pump Calculator to size your duty point.

Technical Limitations of 110V Pumps

Reduced voltage changes what is technically achievable. For a given power output, 110V means higher current, which brings cable size, voltage drop and transformer capacity into consideration.

110V is ideal for smaller portable dewatering pumps, puddle pumps and site drainage equipment. It is generally not viable for high-head applications such as borehole or deep-well pumps using multi-stage impellers. Those duty points typically require 230V single phase or 400V three phase supplies to deliver the required power at a manageable current.

110V Is About Site Safety, Not Pump Performance

110V is about site safety and temporary supplies, not pump capability. The pump duty and the available power source should always be considered together when specifying for a project.

Common Applications for 110V Water Pumps

  • Construction site dewatering
  • Excavation and trench drainage
  • Basement and groundworks
  • Civil engineering and infrastructure projects
  • Hire fleet equipment
  • Insurance restoration work
  • Flood response by professional contractors
Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

Why do UK construction sites use 110V pumps?

110V centre-tapped to earth limits the voltage to 55V to earth, reducing the risk of severe electric shock if equipment becomes wet or damaged. UK HSE guidance, Electricity at Work Regulations and CDM expectations all support 110V as standard for portable site equipment.

Can a 110V pump handle the same flow as a 230V pump?

For the same power output, yes, but with higher current draw. This means cable sizing, voltage drop and transformer capacity all need consideration. 110V works well for puddle pumps, sump pumps and smaller dewatering applications. It is not typically suitable for high-head pumps such as boreholes.

Do I need a transformer to run a 110V pump?

Yes. A 110V pump requires a centre-tapped to earth transformer to convert from a standard 230V mains supply. Most UK construction sites already have suitable transformer distribution as standard.

Do you supply 110V pumps to hire companies?

Yes. We supply hire fleets, restoration contractors and construction companies across the UK.

Can I use a 110V pump for domestic flooding?

You can, but a 230V pump is usually more practical for domestic use. 110V pumps are designed for site supplies, so unless you already have a transformer, a 230V model will plug directly into a standard household socket.
