Two new automatic puddle pumps have joined the Stream range: the compact Stream SPP2-4A for domestic and lighter-duty applications, and the heavy-duty Stream SPK530A for commercial, construction and higher-flow pumping.
Both build on two of our most popular manual puddle pumps, but add something customers have increasingly asked us for: automatic operation at a genuinely low water level.
Instead of relying on a conventional side-mounted float switch, both new pumps use a separate low-level floor sensor. Water reaches approximately 20mm and the pump starts automatically. Once the level falls to around 10mm, it switches itself off again.

Why introduce automatic versions of the SPP2-4 and SPK530?
The manual Stream SPP2-4 and Stream SPK530 have become two of our most popular puddle pumps.
There is a good reason for that. Both are simple low-level pumps that can be placed directly onto a floor and used to remove shallow standing water. The SPP2-4 is compact, lightweight and particularly popular for domestic flood water, while the SPK530 provides substantially greater flow and head for larger floods, commercial premises and site work.
For an attended job, manual operation is often exactly what you want. Put the pump in the water, plug it in, clear the area and switch it off when you are finished. Manual puddle pumps can also usually achieve a lower final water level than their automatic equivalents.
But many of the situations our customers deal with are different.
A cellar may start taking on groundwater overnight. A basement can flood while the homeowner is away. Water can collect in a lift pit or plant room over a weekend. A commercial site may have a known low point that needs to be managed when nobody is standing beside it.
In those situations, being able to pump down to a very low level is only half the problem. The pump also needs to know when the water has arrived.
That is why we created automatic versions of the SPP2-4 and SPK530.
The problem with a conventional float switch
Traditional automatic submersible pumps commonly use a float switch. As the water rises, the float physically rises with it until the switch activates the pump. As the water falls, the float drops again and switches the pump off.
It is a simple and reliable arrangement, in a sump where there is plenty of water depth and room for the float to move.

The difficulty comes when you want to control shallow water across a floor.
A float needs both water depth and physical movement. By the time a conventional float has risen far enough to start a pump, you may already have considerably more standing water than you want in a cellar, basement, lift pit or plant room.
The new Stream automatic puddle pumps solve that differently.
Automatic low-level pumping with a separate floor sensor
Both the SPP2-4A and SPK530A use a separate crab-style floor sensor on its own lead.
The sensor sits flat at the low point where water is expected to collect rather than being attached to the side of the pump. At approximately 20mm of water, it switches the pump on. Once the level has reduced to around 10mm, it switches the pump back off.

There is no separate control panel required. The automatic control is supplied with the pump, so the sensor can simply be positioned at the required low point and the pump connected to a suitable power supply.

The Stream SPP2-4A is the automatic development of the popular SPP2-4.
The FPS Engineered™ team developed the automatic configuration after seeing the same requirement repeatedly: customers liked the size, simplicity and value of the SPP2-4, but wanted a version capable of managing intermittent water without someone having to be present to switch it on.
The pumping unit retains the compact characteristics of the manual model, with a maximum flow of 70 litres per minute and maximum head of 6 metres, but the separate low-level sensor turns it into a practical automatic option for domestic flood-water control.

- Cellars affected by groundwater after prolonged rain
- Domestic basements with intermittent shallow water ingress

The Stream SPK530A applies the same idea to a much more substantial puddle pump.
The manual SPK530 is already widely used where the smaller SPP does not provide enough flow, lift or robustness. The new automatic model retains its 170 litres per minute maximum flow and 11 metre maximum head, but adds the same low-level automatic floor sensor.
That makes the SPK530A the natural step up where automatic operation is needed in a more demanding environment.

- Commercial basements and below-ground areas
- Lift shaft pits and service pits
- Plant rooms and pump rooms
- Construction and site drainage
- Larger garages and commercial buildings
- Higher inflows or longer and higher discharge runs

SPP2-4, SPP2-4A, SPK530 or SPK530A?
The introduction of the automatic models does not make the original manual pumps obsolete. Manual and automatic pumps solve slightly different problems.

The simplest way to choose is:
- SPP or SPK530: choose according to the amount of water and pumping height.
- Manual or automatic: choose according to whether somebody will be there to operate the pump.
If you want a pump stored for occasional emergency use and somebody will be there when it is needed, manual often makes more sense.
If water can arrive while nobody is watching, an automatic model gives the pump the ability to respond as the level rises.
Where automatic low-level pumps make the biggest difference
The real advantage of these two new pumps is not simply that they have an automatic switch. It is that they combine automatic operation with much lower switching levels than a conventional float-operated pump.
That makes them particularly relevant in places where even a relatively shallow depth of water matters:
- Basements and cellars: water can arrive slowly overnight or following prolonged rainfall.
- Lift pits: even relatively small amounts of water can affect equipment and require attention.
- Plant rooms: water needs to be controlled before it reaches vulnerable equipment.
- Garages and lower-ground rooms: shallow ingress can spread over a large floor area.
- Flood resilience: an automatic pump can manage seepage or water getting behind other flood-protection measures.

Automatic does not always mean permanent
There is an important distinction between an automatic portable puddle pump and a fully engineered permanent pumping system.
For intermittent ingress in a cellar, garage or defined low point, an automatic puddle pump can provide a simple way of responding to water without someone having to operate it manually.
Where water enters regularly, the basement is habitable, or failure of the pump would cause significant damage, a permanent sump system may be more appropriate. That can include twin-pump redundancy, high-level alarms and backup arrangements to deal with pump or power failure.

One more thing: remember the discharge hose
Automatic control solves when the pump starts, but the water still has to get somewhere.
Vertical lift, hose diameter and hose length all reduce the flow a pump can actually achieve. A quoted maximum flow is not the flow you will necessarily get when pumping from a basement up to ground level.
